In my copy of the above, page 163 (Tench fishing and baits) says:- he inclines very much to any paste with which tar is mixt,
I have searched the back of the book and can no ref. to "tar" does anyone know what sort of tar he is talking about?

Fred J Taylor mentions a great days' tench fishing using worms picked up from a newly tarred stretch of road. Perhaps using Mr Macadam's finest product as a glug could well be the next 'big thing'................!

It's probably coal-tar. They used it for lots of things in 17th Century - and we still sometimes use it in food colourings, or so sez google.

Well if it's coal tar then stay away from it, its dark brown viscous and sticky, it stinks like s**t and is actually used in anti-dandruff shampoos

Trust me there are far better ingredients to put in a paste

Cheers guys, I know there are many things that will catch fish indeed, far more than are used in general fishing today.
Bait in all it's forms is a subject I have a great interest in, esp the more bizzar.
Still might have a look at coal tar though.
and as for Tarmac I think even I will draw the line there.
