Forgotten baits, how right you are Jeff, and thanks for the reminder to start useing them again. I had good success on French maize over groats two years ago, I don't know why I didn't carry on with the particles.
I reckon between you and Frothy, the pair of you have given us a lot to go on. All we have to do is try it, and its cheap enough.

Stewed wheat not just brilliant from Tench but trotted grains on the hook over hemp really good for roach. Also had some cracking rudd from a local lake.

Jeff,

Thinking about "forgotten" baits have you, or anyone else, got a preparation recipe for Elderberries?
At the house we have access to six or seven elderberry trees which should give a decent crop this year.
Many years ago I used these successfully with hemp and tares for the bigger roach on the Avon, but in those days you bought them in jars covered by an inky blue/black liquid.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Peter,
I think you use elderberies as they are.
As any Elder bushes overhaning a water would be a natural bait anyway.

Baz,

You are of course right, what I meant to ask was a metohd of perserving them for use throughout the autumn and into the winter.

too quick to hit the submit button without first reading through what I had typed :)

And to add to that a new bait - Red Band Conditioner!!

Got a sack on Saturday. It works out at less than 50p per kilo and is a mix of various little seeds with an overall pong of aniseed. It's the aniseed that I remember because we bought a bottle of aniseed oil from the chemists and a few drops over stale maggots brought them to life again. A forgotten flavour?

I am writing another piece now that will include the red band - wait for it!!!

Incidentally - that last one was written way back in May, but the reasons Graham didn't get around to publishing then should by now be obvious.

Yeh, well don't forget my article is all about forgotten baits.

So when did you last use it? Or have you forgotten that?

And why did you stop using it?

And why are you "thicky" carpers?

Great article and pics.We used to use various kinds of grain as kids, can't remember what they were cos my dad gave them to us when he had some left over from his days out but I do remember that we did get the better quality fish on them. That was over 30 years ago but will be trying them again in the next few weeks.
