In Tony Robinson's interesting programme on the worst jobs in medieval Britain, It shows in graphic detail the decapitation on a live eel. Both the head and rest of the body were shown still moving!

Maybe the attitude towards the killing of animals has changed on the media. Or maybe this got through the programme planners.

And with the fact that eels are getting so rare, was this a good thing to portray?

What do you think

Eels rare Ron?

I thought that there were loads of the bloody thing. They are a right pain in the arse and should all be decapitated. Caught loads of the bleedin things while bream fishing the other week and couldnt get away from them. even changed to corn and moved smims but still they come.

Agree with Joskin. Just been on the Trent and had several barbel between 2lb and 10lb 2oz. The minute the light level dropped I became confident but was soon cursing as eel after eel took the sweetcorn. By 8pm I was so fed up with them I packed up. "Off with their heads!" I say

I too couldnot believe the press when they said eel were getting scarcer because I was catching plenty - too many- however I mentioned it to my friend who is and EA fisheries officer (and v v keen angler)and he assured me that all studies had show there to be a major decline in the population. Could it be the rise of otters (favourite food)and of course the ubiquitous cormorants?

My experience concurs that there has been a drastic drop in the eel population. They may be a pain in the arse at times but think about their slow growth and reproductive cycle. It's not like they spawn every spring? Mind you some of our regular fish are struggling such as the well known 'hermaphrodite roach'.

Yes Ron, I watched it tonight. Not pleasant to watch I must admit.

Despite how much of a pest they may be they are a special fish and the decapitation of this fish for a TV programme was out of order. It might not have been so bad had it been intended for the pot but it wasn't.

Beheading a fish due to its nuisance factor is a barbaric response. If you're plagued with them then use different approaches/baits but certainly we shouldn't kill a creature just because we don't want it.

The freshwater Eel species are in freefall across the world and could within twenty years become extinct in Europe if something isn?t done to redress their plight.
Fact!

At this time of year the silver eels are starting to migrate back to the sea down the river systems. This gives a false picture that there are far more about than there actually is.
Fact!

The issue is now so serious throughout the EU that the EU Commission has set up an intergovernmental team to look into the problem and to come up with measures to attempt to redress the problem.
Fact!

Eels are part of the natural ecology of the British riverscape and an indicator of a rivers health.
Fact!

The loss of such species would impoverish our natural river heritage forever and have a knock on effect to the whole river ecology, forever.
Fact!

Like most I don?t like catching eels when fishing for other species, but I do accept their right to exist in our river systems. And as an angler and a conservationist, I?m prepared to put up with them taking my bait even in the dark and the tangles and snot they leave on my line.

To those who say ?off with their heads,? you a bloody disgrace to the name of angling!!!!!

Bring it on You B******s!!!!!!

Thank's for the post Phil. I'm glad someone like yourself has contributed to this thread. I do not call myself an eel expert.

There's a website explaining what's happening to the Eel population at www.angling.freeserve.co.uk/ecsweb.htm

This is the site of the Eel Conservation Society, which is a joint initiative from thr Eel Study Group and the National Anguilla Club.

There's a three page article on this subject in The New Specialist Angler June 2004 (the SAA mag).

well said Phil, sadly we still have a few anglers in our midst who are ignorant of other species, concerns, conservation and preservation, like the angler who believes the only good pike are dead ones, what idiots, we certainly dont need these people in angling

joking apart Joskin, a number of good anglers are very sensitive about the British European Freshwater Eel and many are actively involved in its conservation.

speaking as a fellow angler, you really are on dodgy ground here mate!
