Hi lads
Our local club have recently dug a new lake and as its been done in partnership with a local council they would like a grand opening to publicise the "new local amenity" All very well in itself but where do you start when trying to find someone to do it? Big name anglers like John Wilson or Matt hayes spring to mind but as the idea is to bring people to look at the lake we were thinking of a showbusiness personality who fishes, such as Chris Tarrent.Trouble is i do,nt know where to start or how much it will cost .Any ideas ? ?

wilson or hayes will probably cost 4 to 5 hundred quid, same as a days fishing with them. as for mr tarrant he is considerably more expensive.

to contact them try a google search.

Possibly go to library, get a 'who's who' of showbusiness or similar, will most likely have agents name etc, they would give an indication as to 'appearance fee's', could also be beneficial to have someone living in your area of country, otherwise expenses could be a problem.

Bill, Give the ACA a ring. If you have a big crowd of anglers there and make it a big event Bob James might come up. He'll try to get new members, but try and run a raffle for the ACA as well. Scrounge some prizes from local dealers.

The important thing is to ASK! I asked a famous TV celebrity to attend a function once and he told me he had two prices. One, we couldn't possibly afford and the other was nothing (so long as we kept his wine glass filled). You can guess which option I took.

You never know until you ask.

What's wrong with having The Monk?

It would only cost a Big Mac and Fries and an hour in a bivvy with a Ruffe Slapper.

I used to go fishing with Chris Tarrant when he was doing 'Tiswas' on Central TV. Benny Mills aka 'The Phantom Flan Flinger' made up the threesome. (true)

If we went in Chris' car he made us contribute towards the petrol!

He didn't come cheap even in those days!

Thanks lads i will try some of those ideas and let you know how i get on.I did think of Big Rick and his posse but even though i know he,s an icon in fishing circles i,m not sure he is high profile enough for the masses.

John, he fishes sometimes with Frank Guttfield now and he's still a tight a**e, apparently. Won't buy a ?50 ticket for our stretch but wants to come on as a guest.

You could do a lot worst than having Ron Clay, Bill

Ron has been about a long time is mentioned throughout specialist angling history in many books and articles and was founder of the Northern Specimen Hunters group which played a major part in the devleopment of the big fish movement, Ron was also the first Western angler to write about the bolt rig and thus many consider him the father of this developemnt, he may not be as high profile these days as the likes of Tarrant etc, although our Ron was writing centre page spreads in the times and mail long before many of Matt Hazes types were born those in the know, those in the know certainly know who he is!

Hey Monk you are making me feel embarrassed.

The other problem is that I am not as good looking as Matt Hayes. I don't wear Rapp Band hats, I do not have a tattoo on my body, nor do I spit in the street and I might smell too clean for some. I bathe quite regularly!

I also sound a bit too posh when I speak.....)

Mind you, I'm a darned site cheaper than Hayes or Tarrent.

too modest by far Ron, thats your problem mate, many less anglers (if indeed anglers is the correct terminology), have made loads of money out of the sport, basically for FA. Angling celebrity staus is a case of those who shout loudest, particularly in this period of mass media etc. Many of the real anglers just go fishing and get on with it.

if you cant get a fishy celebrity, any non anti fishing one would be ok, just get them to stress the advantages for the wildlife, kids, council co-operation (might get them to do another) and all that?

Cheeky. Your info regarding Chris Tarrant still being tighter than a gnats watsit dosn't surprise me one bit.

We used to get to fish some pretty exclusive places because of who he was. He always got it free but most times Benny the Phantom and me had to pay.

We used to go back to his mansion at Langley near Stratford on Avon and down a bottle of his brandy. As we left the next morning he used to say 'don't forget, it's your turn to bring a bottle next time'.

This was a bloke who even in those days was on 20 grand a week.
