Carping or Camping?

Rik/Stuart, I liked your article, your logic and your attitude to fishing, and thats coming from a not yet carp angler. Our lass say I'm too young to go camping on my own<g>

Sssshhhhh! Have a care, you guys. If you're not careful, you'll persuade everyone to start looking for fish instead of dropping in the most accessible, comfortable swims.

I suggest you withdraw the feature immediately and write an alternative artice suggesting that it's all about baits and rigs - oh, and "edges" of course (whatever they are).

I respectfully submit that everyone reading Rik and Stuart's feature should ignore it. Indeed, they should go further and treat it with disdain - especially if they fish the same waters as I do...

Looking for fish. Using location skills and watercraft. Huh! Whatever next?

Hey, you guys have got it easy down there. Where I fish we have to lug bivvy tables and guest chairs along to our swims, we don't have the luxury of natural benches! ;o)

It does look a nice water. Good article lads. Rik, maggots, Sssshhhhh!

A cracking article, and very informative for anyone who wants to take note of how to go about things.
In answer to the last question at the end of the article.
Yes, I believe too many people are camping and socialising, rather than weighing things up properly, and then setting up home.

One criticism,
On an 8 acre lake, if everyone used three rods, don't you think things might get a little cramped? that could be over 100 lines in the water with less than a full house, on an 8 acre lake. Assuming all pegs are fishable.

I'm not really criticising Stuart/Rik, it is a really first rate article, on how to go about fishing any lake.
I am trying to visualise a 8 acre lake that I know of with a possible 100 carp lines in the water and what problems it brings.

Is there a limit on the amount of anglers on at one time? Or would that be 14 swims = 14 anglers?
If all those swims were taken up, would you still have plenty of room?

Sorry Stuart, I can't get it out of my head what happens on a certain water I know of. Gary knows of where I am taking about.
The water in the article looks really good though. Plus the way you went about it would deffinately tempt me back into that kind of fishing.

8 acres - absolute max = 42 lines.

I know what you are getting at Baz, but I don't think thats too bad.

I used to fish a park lake of less than 2 acres, there could be a dozen carpers on it sometimes!

I think the main thing is that a lot of people get into a rut.
It's very easy to slip into the nearest swim and then blame everything else other than your own lack of effort.

I know when I last fished with Jeff Woodhouse, I didn't really try and just chucked the rods out.
result = blank

If you want to camp, then fine, but don't complain that the lakes fishing badly, or the best swims have already been nabbed
(we had both of those comments which is bizarre seeing as my swim was empty when those blokes turned up)

I'm lucky in that I'm only allowed to fish days (sometimes fishing into dark). So as I carry much less gear I can roam around a bit looking for likly spots. Also I am quieter than session anglers, I don't spod loads of bait in etc.
One day I was fishing my local mere, you can only fish off wooden stagings. Whilst a camper was knocking in nails to hook his bivvy up I was in corner and had an 18lb'er in margin on maize. Needles he then proceeded to spod long range and blanked.

thanks to all for the comments on the article.
More stuff coming soon, if you want anything covered, then mail either Graham, Stuart or myself.

Special thanks to Jim for the comments.
They mean a lot from a man that's written and thought so much about carping.
