The key to winter clothing is think in layers. Good 'technical' skin layers (vest and bottoms)such as those sold for walkers are a godsend, then think about an insulating layer (fleece, basically) followed by a BREATHABLE waterproof jacket and trousers. I emphasise breathable because if you do any walking in cheap waterproofs, its' not long before you're struggling around before in your own personal sauna. I know breathable is dearer, but it is really, really worth the extra.

I bought a all in one ski suit (last years model) ?30 quid! Looks the part, does the business, loads of pockets etc. Try a outdoor pursuit / skiing shop, not as expensive as you would think.
