Pectoral Fins what purpose do they serve?

Sounds a silly question really doesn?t it? They?re there as stabilisers, rudders, brakes, precision propulsion unites to edge a fish up to a item of food, or away from it. I think most of us have seen a pike use them to turn itself on its axis just before it flees.

Therefore I think we?d say there are pretty crucial to a fish?s well-being, but what if it didn?t have any?
Would it survive?
Would it thrive?
Would it be able to compete with its fellow shoal members?

Would the EA give it a Green Card Mel? :0)

On Passion for Angling, Bob James catches a 24lb carp that has no pectoral fins, as far as my memory serves me, so I would say, in answer to all three questions, yes it would.

Please correct me if I'm wrong as it's been a while since I watched them.

Not seen that episode I don?t think?
Some years ago I use to fish a mere where there was a male tench that weighed 4lb that had only one pec. It was a bit of a mug fish and got caught quite regularly. You knew when you?d hooked it as it charged off like males do, but always went round in a circle.
