We can do without!

I have had a lovely morning on the Trent today, trotting a stick float. I caught a variety of fish: 2 barbel about 6 lbs each, two chub, best about 3 lbs, 4 roach to 1/2 a pound and 6 perch to 1 1/2 lbs, and two dace. I used a large stick float loaded with 8 AAAs and 2 number 8s shirt button, 6lbs reel line, 4lbs fluoro hook length and size 14 specialist barbel hook baited with 4 maggots.

As I was packing up at the bottom of a low tide, I spotted two barbel "anglers" setting up their tackle on the opposite bank. What struck me first about these anglers was that they were both wearing life jackets. Why, I wondered? It didn't take long for me to find out.

They had a blow up boat and on the bank no less than 3 large buckets of what looked like bait, and yes it was bait.

They rowed the bait and and dumped it in the river about 20 yards from the bank!!!

Not only that, they had more bait on the bank and it looked like they were going to dump that in as well.

And they had two sets of 4 rod rods mounted on pods!!!!

I happen to know that the stretch in question doesn't allow more than 2 rods per person.

But seriously guys, I'm not a kill joy and I hate rules, but is this fair angling with rod and line?

Maybe "anglers" like this should use a trawl net!

I'll bite second.

Mr Swords puts loads of gear in the Trent when he fishes it. I know this coz he told me, he catches a few too I hear!

I use a boat sometimes to put bait in, it's much faster than spodding or using a catty and you know something else? When you get out on the water and row up to your marker float that big bucket of bait that looks huge on the bank doesn't go very far!

True story.

Look mate we are talking about barbel - in England's number 1 barbel river, not bream or carp.

River Trent barbel deserve better!

8AAA and 6lb line on a stick float!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't get more aggressive than that...

What happened to the delicate art of proper stick float fishing? You know - 2lb line no. 8 shot on a float taking 5 no. 4...

Stay positive Ron. They are feeding up those fish for you.....Maybe when you do catch them they will be that little bit biger thanks to the cash being pumped in by said 'anglers'.

And 6lb line seems fair for barbel on the river. Much less than that would likely result in fish snaps and a range of fish best described as facial piercing brigade.

Its the old horses for courses argument. The gentle art of trotting vs heavy bait tactics and 4 rods......4....does seem overzealous.

I don't know if you have fished the tidal Trent Mark, but it's a world of difference to mini-ditches like the Dorset Stour and Hampshire Avon. Its also a different kettle of fish (excuse the pun) when you have a wind in your face and you want the tackle to keep to the intended path. It was only when I changed to a decent sized float and shotted it to run nice and straight through the swim that I started getting bites.

Not only that I was fishing with tackle that would handle a wide variety of fish, from double figure barbel to roach and dace.

And I know that Lee Catches a lot of barbel. I have also caught a heck of a lot of Trent barbel too, but neither of us fishes to this degree of intensity.

The problem I have is 4 rods, feeding that way is nothing new, even for Barbel, each to their own.

Ron,
are you saying you have NEVER baited a swim in this way before, still water or river???. On the Trent in the late 70's and during the 80's anglers used to use 8 pints of maggots and 25kilo of groundbait in a 4 hour session. No one said a thing, because it worked, and very well.

I have never baited the Trent anything like as aggressively as I saw this morning. A single kilogram of crushed hemp and some crushed boilies yes. Also a few pellets in a PVA bag or open ended feeder, no more than that. I might use 1/2 a kilo of pellets as freebees, not more.

And I've NEVER used more than 2 rods. And most of the time when the fish start biting I use one rod.

I use six if i think i can get away with it. Two nets just incase. Boat beats a spodding session any day. You cant beat pouring it in over the side of the boat. Back to camp, light the BBQ, crack a tinny open, bliss. :D

Yes Dave, you might be able to get away with 3 or even 4 rods when carp fishing a huge lake, but certainly not for barbel. I have had a "double header", whilst fishing for barbel using only 2 rods and I know that Lee Swords has had the same too.

Some stretches of the Trent look like the Durban South Beach during a sardine run with all the rods pointing skywards.

And any rate, these days I cannot afford to buy two rod licences.
