Anti Angling

Obviously they dont seem to have advanced very far. The page is for the 2000-03 season.
I dont wish to be blase about this because I do believe that anti angling groups pose a threat.
However, can you imagine the government trying to ban angling?
The job losses alone would be in their tens of thousands. What government is going to deliberately destroy thousands of jobs.
It would cost them in the following ways to name but a few.
Loss of
National insurance contributions
Income tax revenue
VAT
EA licences
Excise duty from all the fuel used in delivery and used by anglers in connection with the sport.
There is a huge angling infra-structure out there.
They would also have the additional costs of benefits for those now out of a job.
I dont know just how much angling is worth monetarily to the economy but I'm sure that its a hell of a lot more than hunting with dogs.
No government is going to take a chance on such bad publicity.

All garbage I've read before Michael.

"NATIONAL ANTI-ANGLING WEEK JUNE 16th - 24th 2000"

Bit out of date, isn't it? Like all their propaganda.

100,000 is the amount of people this labour government are going to put out of work when they make civil servants redundant next year.

"What government is going to deliberately destroy thousands of jobs."

It's been done already Baz, by the Thatcher b***h.

Don't think it will happen with fishing though.

I read somewhere that the Labour Party, including Mr. Blair, are very pro-angling.

That may be true, but what about the Labour back benchers, the biggest anti-angling mob of all. How are they going to explain that to the back benchers.

T.B. - He has to be, the biggest angling club in the North East is in his constituency.

Take from the EA's Catch Magazine for the North.
"The total capital value of fisheries in freshwater is estimated at 3 billion, of which 75% is attributed to coarse fisheries. Anglers are also believed to spend the same amount altogether on their sport each year."
Add together the two sums and that's spend and assets totaling 6 billion pound.
The numbers employed in angling related jobs last time I saw some figures was 24 K.

As the Agency puts it "these are huge sums of money and indicates just how important fisheries are to the country...."

I'm pleased that a young guy like yourself is taking the time and trouble to keep an eye on what the antis are up to.
There will come a time in the future when middle age grumpy old men like me are to old and lack the sharpness to take on the younger more mentally agile antis.

Angling politics needs more young anglers to start taking on and learning the skills of how to deal clinically and effectively with its enemies.
And that starts with observations found out by yourself regarding these types of information gathering issues.

Do not let comments put you off because they may already be known.

They clearly weren?t to you, and that's perhaps why you raised it.

Keep up the good work please!

I fully agree Phil.
My coments certainly were not meant to belittle Michaels observations.
We all have to keep a close watch on the antics of the anti angling brigade.

The loony left of the Labour party, aka as Dianne Abott, Clare Short and their ilk, are alive and well and residing on the planet Zog!

They are anti-this and anti-that, in fact anti-anything that gives people innocent enjoyment.

You only have to listen to any recent Labour party conference to realise the rank and file are as far left as ever.

Those in government mostly represent that biggest of political hypocrisies, the 'champagne socialist'.

The Tories, albeit that at the moment they are about as useful as a bacon sandwich at a barmitzvah, at least don't try to hide their comfortable lifestyles and enormous incomes.

Clare Short, Dianne Abott.Does anyone take them seriously these days?
One lives on planet loony, the other just gets fatter with every BBC freebie.
Come election time she will have to be pushed round in a supermarket trolley.
