What float rods for carp?

I need a strong float rod to free-line bread near the margins for doubles. My Leeda avon style does not have the stopping power. Any recommendations up to ?100 ?

cant you use a normal light carp rod, perhaps a 1.75 lb ?

An Avon style rod must be about a pound or one and a quarter test curve.

I'd go along with the heavy tench/light carp rod as suggested by BN.

Nash Hooliguns or similar....

I've been eyeing up the 1.75lb TC Hooligun for exactly this purpose, Guy - and at a shade under ?70, it seems like a damn good buy! The only problem I have is convincing my g/f that I need ''ANOTHER rod?!?!?!'' <s>

As far as Lottie's concerned, one rod should do me... ''Why've you got about 20 rods in the cupboard?'' <sigh> It's like trying to explain the off-side rule...

Give Specialist Tackle of Romford, Essex a ring:ask for Danny Henwood and see if they still sell the Harrisons 1.25 TENCH/Barbel special or ask about the Free Spirit range.

My 1st 20+ in 1982-ish was caught on a Terry Eustace 12' Carbon Avon.
I still use this rod for Centre Pin/margin work for carp landing two consecutive 20+ fish last Autumn.

I had one of the Harrison 1 and a half test curve blanks. Is brillient for light work, but does not have enough backbone for a 15 pound mad mirror near weed or snags.

The best rod i own for this is a Daiwa Amorphous stalking rod. Its 11 foot 6 inches and a pound and a half tc, but it locks solid in the butt and would stop a train!

The hooligans dont have enough rings for my liking. Why a light carp rod has long range ringing in beyond me.

Have a look at some of these Barbel rods that are about, maybe Fox. They seem to have a decent amount of rings and poerful butts to stop big fish in currents.

Oh, and of course, there is my best margin rod I have ever seen...a 10 foot Sharpes "The Carp" split cane rod made in the 60's.

If you can stretch to another ?15 or so the new Shimano "Carp Cruncher" Match 390FA is absolutely superb. I have stopped a 12.5 pounder in it's tracks on 6lb line. Not cheap but what a rod!
