Having the feed particles such as hemp, dari seeds and groats work for barbel i wonder if any of the larger seeds work for hookers, ive caught on the obvious sweetcorn in the past, with a fair amount on tares and one or two on maples but other than that zilch, anyone had different experiences?

I've done well on tares, particularly with shy fish, but i've bever tried anything bigger. I would have thought that any of the particles in partiblend have a chance of working, but I've no experience I'm afraid.

Hi Sean,i tried a swim on the Ouse a few years ago with maples and hemp, the swim was usually responsive but i couldnt get the fish to settle on a relatively small bed of feed,i thought they would be brilliant, being like a large tare with a sweet flavour,i wasnt put off totally as the fish could have been under pressure in the days previous, thing is i havnt been a member since and most of my fishing is now on rivers where i cant see the fish,so im less confident as to the barbel's response.

Hi Darren,i found that once pellet and boilies came to the fore corn seemed to lose attractiveness, especially to barbel, who at times now visibly shy away from beds of corn just like they do often to cubes of meat on clear rivers.

thought i would give it a go as ive not tried it before and thought the change from yellow corn might prove to be different. As i fish 2 rods and baited the other with pellets and caught several barbel it has proved pretty conclusive the barbel arent having it. Beats blanking though

But how much of that is true today and how much is just in our heads?

Would most current 3 to 6lb barbel have been born when meat and corn were widely used??

I doubt some have seen a cube of meat.

I catch barbel regularly on corn on the waggler, but rarely do they come out on a feeder. Similarly I catch barbel all the time on caster on wagler, yet they never show to caster on the feeder.

It might be more down to the presentation of the bait rather than the bait itself?

Without doubt Paul, but i had similar happen to me on the H.Avon with a feeder and caster, but when i straight leaded them caught loads, its what they wise up to,i would just like to think that barbel would eat peanuts, maples, chick peas and tiger nuts, but would they.Just to say Paul on the venues i fish 3 pounders are quite a rare beast(as are the bigger ones lol),so they see most of the regularly used baits and i have deliberately placed lumps of meat in swims with confidently feeding barbel present and witnessed the clouds of dust and yet in high water or rolling it at times, superb.

One of my favourie hookbaits when feeding parti mix/ hemp is Chickpeas. these are re-hydrated in the left over water from preparing the Hemp. The smell and taste ( to me ) is that of a large grain of hemp. The hookers are transported to the river in a pellet pump with Hemp oil in.
Incidently this produced my pb Bream on the Thames at 14lb 11oz

Not sure who was more suprised me or the fish! Unfortunately and very typical of me i was fishing alone and was before I invested in a camera with which to do self take photos. The same day saw Roach (on the same bait) to a little ove 1.5lb but no Barbel.

Good man. Is it a secret where it came from as the thames is rather large. I havn't fished the Thames yet this year as I'm putting a lot of time into the w. avon. The avon is a great confidence boosting river at times, with my best day this year producing 4 doubles.

On LAA water at Appleford Mark, bottom end,it doesnt really matter as the barbel seem to be fairly mobile(if they feed during the day),the one thing i do find is that they spend a lot of time with bream.I used to travel the length and breadth of the country, chasing fish, now i dont seem to have the time or inclination, but im going on a family holiday to Christchurch shortly and will give the Stour my undivided attention every evening.

Thanks for that, I have no intention of fishing the area but, I am very interested in the upper Thames in general as apart from the Cherwell it is my local water.

Mark,im finding the Thames as hard a fishery as any ive fished, for chub, bream, barbel or carp, its nothing like it used to be.

hemp can be used on a hair (4 or 5 grains ) the way i used to fish it was to use a size 12 or 14 mustad power specialist hook with a 3 or 4lbs hair the hair would have granny knots tied in the end to enable it to be gripped with small forceps, holding the hair with the forceps let your feeder / lead hang free this will put tension into the line, using the large type of hemp the grains can be pushed onto the hair in much the same way that they are pushed onto a hook, they will stay in place quite well, i have used this method since 1976 when rivers were very low,i cant use the method now as i have a condition that makes my hands shake (good job i dont walk around with my hands in my pockets ) but it still works my son took his pb from the trent (16-02) and also a 13-06 from the nene last year, once you get used to it it becomes quite easy to do, this method was always fished with a feeder introducing lots of hemp.

I recently tried fake corn cocktailed with pellet just to make the bait slightly buoyant & more high vizz in coloured water, I left the bait out for a good few hours with no luck, I then took the corn off & with in an hour i had a 9lb 7oz barbel. That tells me that even in coloured water, if fish are there they will find the bait some times you just have to wait a while. ;)
