How much money are you getting for Christmas? I always seam to find something else I must have when it comes to Barbel fishing - but. Lets start with the basics - a good sized landing net, ESP have just brought out a new one for about ?12.00. They do them in several sizes, go for the biggest. You want a good unhooking mat and some long bank stick to get the rod up in the air. A deep vee rod rest so the rod is held firm and want fall out. I think Ironbridge is straightforward. I believe there is a wear, which holds some good fish.
Good hooks are needed - ESP Raptor size 10's are good. Go for a straightforward running rig to start with large feeders filled with maggots and hemp. A big bunch of maggots on the hook will get you fish. Good luck!

8-12Ib line for the reel depending on the size of the fish(Krystonite).
Hooks Esp Raptors for the larger fish and Drennan Specimen for the smaller ones.
Light comfy chair(Lounge Lizard).
Rodrest a lot of the lads on the Ribble use the large Butterfly tops.
Bankstick go for a power one that you screw into the ground gaureented to be pulled out by a Barbel at sometime.
Landing net go for a metal oval frame easier to handle than the Carp triangles on a river. Unhooking Matt(fishrite) these come incorperating handles which means you can weigh your fish and return without to much handling.
Scales and a camera.
Tip lights(drennan isotopes) for fishing into dark
last but not least a good set of thermals and waterproofs as the fishing this time of year is usually in the rain.

I have a put a few names next to the items these are what i use there are others on the market just as good. Enjoy i have never looked back since starting coarse fishing again.

I'll go with Bryan on what hes wrote and add Halibut pellets 14 mm as bait. You?ll need a drill to drill (Drennan?s the best) the holes in them and a baiting needle and a Pk. of boilie stops. Have a look at the rig page for how to tie hair rigs up.

gassed maggots are maggots that have been doused in neat flavour and sealed in a bait tub, they do not die but they become comatose, similar to the matchmans dead maggots just smellier and yes it is the dynamite source liquid. sorry.
