I have a couple of Fox hangers which I've used a few times. I've found them to be ok once you've fiddled around with the line grip and the weights. However, are there any advantages in using hangers as opposed to butt swingers or vice versa? I also understand tnat Fox and probably others)market micro butt swingers. When would you use these as opposed to using the standard size swinger?

franco, hangers and swingers all have a time and place in your kit.on a dead calm day no wind margin fishing with slack line hangers are ideal.same conditions short range again hangers.if there is a wind the hanger will be affected so then is the time to use swingers.the further out you fish while using swingers will determine how heavy to set the weight.if you're fishing at long range(90 yards plus)with a tight line you need the weight set heavy to register the take.i personally would use the micro butt swingers for tench or bream fishing.i have a set of regular swingers and a set of regular hangers.most of the time i use hangers providing there is no wind.like before if its windy the swingers come on.

If your just starting out then I would recommend sticking to a pike float for indication if possible as you will see bites here far sooner than you would with buzzers and this is important to a learning pike fisherman...

As a beginner you will strike at a lot of false alarms (no pun) with bite indicators but float fishing, you should hit most of your fish + there is no greater excitment than seeing a classic pike bung clide under the surface...

Note: Well worth using a swinger with it though for that moment when you take your eyes off the float to pour a coffee from the thermos!!! ;0)

p.s. how has the fishing been going?

Cheers

Thanks to both William and Jeff for the replies both of which contained helpful advice - to give me the best options, I've now invested in 1 standard Fox swinger and 1 specialist Fox swinger.

The fishing's been going ok Jeff but there's an awful lot to catch up on after a break of 35 years or so! I would have to say that I prefer watching a float to ledgering and my best fish so far on a float was a 16.5 lb common in October (using a match rod and 4lb mainline at the time!)
