Ebay very addictive so many bargains and overpriced junk. I,ve bought quite few a good priced items on there but a lot of bidders go overboard on the auctions I wonder if they know that some items can be bought cheaper brand new in the shops

I think it's a case of once they bid they don't like to be outbid/beaten and forget about the price ---

If your looking at an item and people start getting carried away let them no where they can get it new for less they will thankyou for the information (Not the person winning at that time of course). After all we are all looking for bargains, just some people are better at checking the data before bidding.

I am constantly amazed at what some people will pay on EBay for items they can get cheaper elsewhere. Having said that I did pick up a nice Shimano Twinpower picker rod at a bargain price. The trick is to decide what you want to pay and once youi've put in a bid (which should be as late as possible anyway) not to revise it.

Ross, how much postage on those 6000's. You have to watch them, some charge the earth for post and packing.

John - Shimano Twinpower picker rod - it wasn't mine was it? I sold one.

Les, don't let them go for a song. Get a mate to put in a higher bid, pay the commission and put them back on at a later date. Nothing is selling right now, all the better shops are clear - no offers.

Before Xmas I sold a 22year old Abu Cardinal 54 for ?82. I can't believe it.

Someone told me of that trick Peter. A) it saves letting it go too cheaply and b) you'd only have to pay a commission if you put a reserve on it. I only did it once when a reel was going for ?1.

Stuff that, it was worth ?10 of anyone's money, but I goofed. I had it withdrawn, properly.

I think the problem with e-bay these days Jeff is that everyone is getting smarter on how to both sell and buy.

Only a few years ago there were some great bargains to be had via e-bay especially for centrepins and Cane Rods.
About 3 years ago I picked up a MkIV Avon and a Mitchell 300 (original French one with the dog leg drag lever) for ?28. Both were in excellent condition and I still use them today.

The only things I bid for these days are old angling books and the ocassional piece of angling pottery as I a mtrying to copmplete the fishing series from Portmerrion.

Nice little story in the paper this week, bloke on eBay auctioning bookcases, 'Buy Now' ?29.99, P&P ?10.

Problem was, items were being delivered by Argos, delivery price ?3.50, and the item was being delivered direct from the Argos catalogue at ?19.99.

eBay have suspended this seller and withdrawn the ad at Argos's request.

Now that's the way to do it !!!!!!!.

There was a guy (could have been a woman) sellign what appeared to be a designer handbag. Lots of customers too, except that when you read the fine print all it was - was a list of places you can buy the designer handbag!

And people had been paying up to ?15 + ?1 post to get hold of the list which was sent by Email anyway. He (or she) attracted a load of red splats and trade soon ceased.

Fortunately, most traders are honest. The worst I did was to buy ?12 worth of lures I thought were Rapala, but it said "Rapala like". They were crap and 2 of the 4 went to the bin, the other two got new hooks and split rings on them.

I've bought some excellent top brand rods and reels except one reel that does have a design fault and it is a well-known make! More later maybe.

We'll find out Merv, I just wrote to the MD of that company. I have had dialogue with him before, we'll see if he remembers me and answers my questions.

Also, if you were going to produce rubbish under a brand name, you'd pick on the best seller. This one, though normally good, isn't the best seller and it wouldn;t be worth anyone copying it.

You see Ross, ?10 is a bit of p**s take. The Post office charges just ?5.20 for next day GUARANTEED recorded and insured delivery up to 1 kg. What does it cost for an old box that used to have stationery in and a roll of sticky tape off the market. They do it so they don't have to pay Ebay a commission on the selling price.

Another story in the Daily Mirror today.

Bloke has his 'specialist tools' stolen, 6 months later, he looks on eBay to see if he can replace them, recognizes his 'own' tools being advertised, places the winning bid, get's the advertisers name and address and informs the police, police then pay seller a visit, he says he bought them at a car boot sale not knowing they'd been stolen.

The police admit that they cannot charge the seller, as the goods could have been sold on many times in the intervening months.
