I worked it out last night.
Trust me - HE IS NOT DEAD OR ABOUT TO DIE!
Herbert's book was entitled "The EARLY Adventures of ....." , which implies that there is a "LATER Adventures" book yet to come. If he dies, he can't have any "later" adventures. Case solved.
