How to pack a spool out !

Maybe a simple question, but my son wants to know how to fill a spool without spending a fortune on line. Personally I do not know, as I bought enough line to fill the spool. He has cost me too much already, so any advice I can pass onto him will be appreciated.

Paul,
When I fill a new spool, what I do is put my new line on first.
Then I fill the rest of the spool with backing line, or any old line that I have about, and fill the spool to just below the rim. About an eigth of an inch below the rim is about right.

I then get a spare spool of the same depth, and rewind the line onto it, so that the new line is on top.

Failing this, you can take the reel to your tackle shop and ask them to put backing line on for you.

Paul,
It's also a good idea to put the spool of line in a bowl of water as you are reeling it onto the other reel. It helps to prevent line twist.
