Went up to Whitby just a few weeks ago and saw loads of references to Kayak fishing. Was at Ilfracombe just a few days ago and came across specialised Kayak rods - funny little things just three or four feet in length.

I'd love to get a Kayak and do this kind of thing. Anyone else interested here?

it's a good method of getting into places where no one else can go quietly and with little disturbance, such as coastal coves and areas of the broads.

it would probably just turn out as a disaster for me i'm enough danger in a full sized boat never mind kayak

Yeah, it's very new isn't it? Looks great fun.

Wonder of it'll catch on in rivers? Might be some interesting legal positions there though!

When I used to fish estuaries for bass it was unheard of,and that was just a few years back now, but I wish I'd thought of it back then (actually I did think of it, but never acted) I could have cleaned up!

Fairly cheap into the bargain. You can get started for just a few hundred quid and even have a two man, plus roof rack and rods for much less than a grand.

It's very common down here in Torquay, especially off Meadfoot Beach. I was told by the owner of the tackle shop on the harbour, who does it, that a friend of his had 30 bass in one session.

Spinning seems to be very popular.

I can imagine. When I used to specialise in bass fishing on the Essex coast it was all bait fishing as the sea was always coloured to some degree, but the rules were the same regardless - location, location, location.

Thirty bass is easily achievable if you find the right hot spots and Kayaking seems a brilliant approach to getting into all those inaccessible places that you can't get to on foot, or by boat without spooking them.

I can imagine launching off the shingle and gliding into my favourite old low water creek marks right now, rather than trudging across a mile of glutinous mud to reach them!

I'm just getting into it, Ive had a couple of days on the sea now on my kayak after practicing 'falling' off and getting back aboard quickly on a safe inland lake beforehand.
The experiance of being on the sea is good and you don't have to be as fit as you may think and in any case its something that will improve your fitness as you do it.
The fishing is very similar to being in a small boat and quite comfortable as you can sit 'sidesaddle' on the kayak with your legs in the water.
I suppose its like most things, get the safety aspect sorted and you can enjoy the rest.
I'm now booked on a kayak match at Scarborough in the 25th September and just hope that the sea is nice and calm and that a few fish are biting.

Kayak fishing

Really enjoyed seeing those photos guys. I was lucky enough to be living in Southern California not long after the original pioneers out there really started to attract a large following with their exploits on the ocean.

Had my own Cobra Fish 'n' Dive which I reluctantly left behind with a friend when we had to move back to the UK 3 years ago, but really miss my 'yakin' days.

I am very jealous of those of you who live on or near the great bays and estuaries of the UK as they are ideal fishing spots at the best of times, but are even more accessible by kayak. The steep Sussex shingle is not so kayak friendly - launching is one thing, coming back in is another once the waves are breaking.

Good advice for newbies who are beach launching through the surf is to go and practice without your fishing gear a couple of times and in any case unless you are very proficient always stow your rods and loose items inside the kayak or in other secure storage before coming back in to the beach. Getting overturned by a wave is easy as you practice surfing in but better to just end up a bit damp with a bruised ego than shatter your rods and dump your tackle in the surf!

The Norfolk Broads must also be a fantastic kayak fishing spot in the summer I suspect. Very similar to sections of the Colorado river out in the desert we used to go to. Lots of big reed beds and small channels not navigable by larger craft that lead to quiet lagoons with unpressured fish! Maybe I'll see you there sometime!

Tight lines and happy paddling!

The weather makes the difference.

I have been using a Kayak out here in Gambia for a couple of years and although I also have a boat I much prefer the kayak experience. The weather of course means kayak fishing here is quite different to the UK, i just wear shorts and t shirt, plus L Jacket, as it is hot and sunny every day. I seldom go offshore and much prefer the rivers where I can spend all day without ever meeting anyone else fishing.

I think it is the tranquility and opportunity to see all the wildlife without disturbing them while fishing that is the appeal. The rivers here have some monster fish, and a kayak can get into all the shallow mangroves where the boats can't venture.

I also think fishing in a location like this makes it easier for a novice as there is no fear of falling in when the water is like a warm bath. I can't imagine that being plunged into a freezing scottish loch would be as pleasurable even in a wetsuit.

Tinker: There's a specialised fishing kayak I've seen in Florida which has 'training floats' like out-riggers on the back. This prevents any chance of the craft being rolled over. The locals fish with a fly rod and a back-up spinning rod if the wind gets up. Very safe mate.

They are as safe as the people who use them. Dingy fishing is dangerous this idea is asking for trouble. Two of my friends picked up a kayak fisher in the blackwater estuary of of brightlingsea where he berths his boat the man was all in and had been in the water for over an hour and was that knackered he could not get back in his kayak he was so glad to be picked up and swore he would never go in one again . I do not know if you have done any fishing in small craft for trout or pike let alone on the estuery or open sea if you have would you use one of these for fishing it is a complete folly as far as Iam concerned and I have crewed on charter boats out of plymouth and fished from boats most of my adult life and fishing from these craft is lunacy.
