I fish my local 30 hectare lake regularly, in past I have been plagued by the chat. This year I had some fantastic fishing and not a poisson chat in sight, I started to think that the local club had done something about the problem. I was wrong. August arrived and the dreaded chat came to life, they are feeding everywhere. I am now considering leaving this water alone until the winter.Has anyone else experienced this seasonal situation in France?

Oh yes. August on the Lot. Fish a chuck....poisson chat, poisson chat, poisson chat. August on the Adour. Fish a chuck..poisson chat, poisson chat, poisson chat.

I try to find the really fast flowing stretches -seems to be the only solution!

I'm relying on Mistrel Rosehip boilies to avoid the little so and so's when I visit France in a fortnight.

What's poison chat? It sounds like a discription for most my local anglers vocabulary, but I'm betting it's an annoying little fish.

a poisson chat is a slimy, spiky hungry little thing that would make a cockroach look cuddly and frail.

Treat them very much like signal crayfish, both are allegedly omnivorous but both show a distinct dislike for several plant based baits and absolutely devour all fish based baits; pellets, boilies etc

If allowed to use Tiger nuts do so over a bed of hemp, with a few Tiger nuts in PVA works very well BUT be aware it is very easy to over feed Tiger nuts.
As mentioned above they don't like hemp so any bait inconjunction with it should work well.

Maize/sweetcorn though eaten by Poisson Chat (and crays) neither tend to bother for long with flavoured artificial versions??!!

And Chick peas, flavoured or not don't seem to get the unwanted attention from the dreaded P.C's (or crays).
So bed of hemp fished in conjunction with Tiger nuts, Chick peas, artificial baits and I'd hazard a guess at many beans and nuts also not getting their attention. Give a few a try as Chick peas etc don't seem to have a very long period of success before the fish go off them.

Here's a guide to some potential baits and there prep times:

What size do they grow to, and is there any chance of them getting established over here?

Normally you're talking ounces with a one pounder being a real specimen.

Yes there every chance that they could easily get established in the UK, I don't know if it would be a possibility for fertilised spawn to become attached too an anglers net and be carried back home and the spawn to be dropped off in a UK water thus populating the water
But certainly they could populate our waters if live fish were stocked into a UK waters.

Then they'll be as invasive a species as signal crayfish.:(

I really do hope that they are not introduced to the UK.I am gratefull for all the interesting advice, however it is all aimed at avoiding them whilst fishing for carp. Even though I live in carp fishing heaven I do like to ring the changes and try for some fun with other species, crucian, roach, rudd, bream, so pineapple, tigers ect are not always an option

Try Bread bleak, its not 100% fool proof but it seems to avoid them as well as anything.

Just noticed the chat on the chat. Fished lakes in central France a few years ago and was plagued by the blighters on boilies and meat. The problem was cured by using cheese hair rigged like luncheon meat. Worked a treat, lots of different styles of cheese to go at. As I am an opportunist fisherman and dont have much specialist gear I guess you guys with flavourings would do far better than I did but still cgo a couple of fish an hour. In warmer weather when the Carp were on top that was a Brucie bonus as the Chats dont come up.
