I too thought the 'hotties' were no longer hot and that the cichlids etc.had all disappeared
I believe they fish for the carp in there now

I know a bloke who, years ago, when we were fishing there caught this strange looking pink coloured fish with blue spots which ,when he unhooked it and was putting it in his net it jumped out of his hands and 'ran' up the bank using its pectoral fins like legs!!
It was reported in The Liverpool Echo and it turned out to be a type of fish called a mud hopper which originates in Taiwan....

Yea ed. According to my dad because of all the warm water pouring into it there once was exotic fish in it.I would love to see that article about the 'mud hopper'.

The mudhopper story I heard was a south American white catfish, the angler put it down on the banks and it ran through his legs, off down the banks, he chased it for a while and it eventually dived back into the canal.

I have an old article in Freeline magazine somewhere, that was the NASGs magazine, it was written by me old mate Ron Pendleton of the St Helens Freshwater Study Group and is about the Hotties and the Chillids, ca 1975

I dont think there is one mate, Ron wrote in the old freeline magazine which was the publication of the National Association of Specimen Groups, it changed into the Nationsal Association of Specilaist Anglers around 1980 and relaunched the publication under the name of the Specialist Angler (and that too has regrouped under SAA as the new Specialist Angler. I do have a full collection of Freeline in the attic, I take a note of your details and see if I can find the one with the piece in it, it was largely about St Helens Chilids
