You could do a lot worse than take out a subscriptin to one of the magazines - Improve your Coarse Fishing, David Hall's Match Fishing, etc. They carry a lot of useful articles and Q&A pages for learners. Also, the ad's have pleenty of bargain-priced tackle. Poles are like cars and tellies these days. Everyone wants this year's model and you can pick up "last year's" (usually the same as this year's but with different graphics) at much-reduced prices. Despite what asdverts might claim, development in poles doesn't happen in giant leaps. Most improvements are to minor details. The big problems have all been sorted. Good luck

On the road to rack & ruin !!!
if you hunt around, you might still be able to get the leeda assasin pole at a good price.vale angling in northwich sell quite a bit of leeda stuff, give them a ring and see what they can do.my match type tackle is all the leeda assasin range including the pole.for the limited amount of this type of fishing i do,the prices are good and so is the quality.
you could also take a butchers at the range of poles dragon carp/match do and also the badger range.i`ve read and heard some good feedback about the last two.

hi, i also am having a hard time deciding on which pole to get i am a little more experienced in pole fishing and wold like to step up to a 12.5m pole or longer from an 11m within a ?200-?250 budget. I am swaying towards the SHIMANO TECHNIUM XT COMPETITION 12.5M pole. But has anyone got any good poles they would reccommend within my budget. Thanks in advance

look at the middy works.there are some good deals with lots of extras.

Fisherman no2, remember that you need a box to fish off plus some rollers.

I have the leeda assassin and find it ok. very robust and not too pricy I have been fishing with a pole for the last year and have really enjoyed it. You will find that you catch more straight away

Search the web for the Leeda Powerhouse 12.5 meter carp pole, this pole is now discontinued and you can pick one up for ?89 with one spare top, great value if you are on a budget.

Wow. That is cheap for a branded pole. The Preston Zyrium at 12.5 metres, also discontinued and a very nice piece of kit, is available for around ?150. A bit over your budget but got great reviews a couple of years ago.

Yeah i can also recommend the Leeda Powerhouse... So much so i nearly bought another one yesterday, just to get the extra top kits... Normally you get 3 of them and a hit and hold margin pole. you should be able to get either the 12.5m or the 14.5m for beteen ?80-?110 hard to beat that for the money. Check out Ebay some nice new ones on there from tackle shops. Check 'em out.

I can also recomend the shimano technium, I have the old model and use it as my second pole in situations where I dont want to risk damaging my more expensive browning CC.
( bigger fish or rocky banks etc.)

Because it is not my best pole I don't realy look after it and give it a fair amount of abuse and it has stood up well.

Apparently the XT version has been improved so should be a good buy.

Shimano also offer excelent aftersales service, when I cracked a section by sitting on it I phoned shimano and was honest about why the section had cracked but they still asked me to return it to them for annalysis, two days later they sent me a brand new section!

Just realised how old this thread is, so you've probably bought your pole now!

What did you get & is it any good?
