Alone, or with a mate?

Depends if it is a fishing mate or just someone who is keeping me company with the odd chance of picking up a rod for me but on the whole I catch more when alone .

Fishing with a mate can mean you spend time socialising when may be you should concentrate on fishing, but you can also try different methods see what's working and both use that method.

I recently fished with my brother-in-law and he was catching more than me, after a quick chat on bait tactic adding sweet corn to the method mix improved my catch rate.

Always alone(for many reasons)but mainly because I just enjoy the peace and quiet and suiting myself with time and location....

Like today;I fished a small pit in what was total peace until two guys turned up and spent the next 5 hours discussing everything from tuition fees to car servicing and walking up and down from each others swim plus the inevitable mobile calls to check on the wife......NOTHING wrong with that but I wouldn't want to deal with it-friend or no!!

....and yes,I do understand the 'exchange of ideas' might well be a good thing.....

I normally fish alone (coz I don't have any mates) but I often see people I know on the bank and have a chat. Basically I like to come and go as a please and don't won't to be tied to some one else.

I'm quite happy fishing on my own, but usually go with my son who is just as keen as me. We fish together but can go for hours without saying a word. There's nothing worse than fishing with someone who's getting bored and wants to pack up. It's often struck me that fishing is a particularly solitary pastime that non anglers must find difficult to understand.

Mostly fish alone now days, enjoy a few weekends with my sons.

Fish in's are for meeting old and making new friends and good fun.

On your own there is no tie, just do as you want when you want.

Out of choice I would prefer to fish with me old mate Phil but I know I actually fish better when I'm on my own....but I'm happy to do either.

I'm no good at "chatting" whereas Phil will talk to anyone & gets an awful lot of good info by doing so. That's his job on a "new" water....and very good at it he is too.

I aways prefer going fishing with a friend, even though we might be 100s of yards from each other whilst we actually fish, the social aspect is very important. I'm grumpy when I go alone.

I notice the beaver swimming past before he notices me. The odd fox trotting along the opposite bankside. An elk crossing
A bit of both for me Harvey-- but hells bells mate not many elk n beaver on the Don around Sheffield-- the odd urban fox for sure-- you can tell em from their country cousins cos they have blackened teeth from eating all the throwaway takeaways that the drunks leave unfinnished of a night!
Lots of "growlers" lower downstream around Rotherham in the evening mind!!:D:D

Only in the last few years have I fished with others, mainly I'm looking for solitude. However, the 'right' partner makes me fish a lot more effectively. There is also time for chilling but usually it's a shared problem solving session which benefits both parties. I've certainly learned faster from fishing with others and it's nice to have a choice!!

Derbyshire: best beer, best cheese, best puddings.
I think the difference with me is (aside from the friendly banter and chat) when I'm not catching.

With a mate, I'm keen to change tactics or swims and work to improve my chances.

On my own, I'm more inclined to reel in and have a half hour kip.

:)

For me, I would say it depends! If I was on a mission to catch large Carp from a big low stocked water, then I would be alone, I fished this way for a 10 day sesh and spoke to only one person in that time. Many of you will not understand this hermitry, but I can say that after a few days alone, you become one with the water and your quarry! So much so, that you can feel the change in air pressure, you pick up on every detail around you and just know when a wind is going to grow and push into your baited Bay!

On the split side, on easier waters I'm up for a social fish with a couple of good friends, a beer or ten and a BBQ, these days I do more of the latter due to my location and the logistics!

At the end of the day, go and enjoy your time on the bank, no matter if the fish get involved or not!
