Hi I don't know if there's anyone there like me who enjoys a good bend in a rod. I've been using Shimano Tribal 2.75's for the last year but they seem a bit over gunned for my type of venues. I'm only casting a max of about 30 - 50 yards and places in the north don't hold too many 20plus fish.

I've read that barbel rods are being used for floater fishing to good effect.

Would barbel rods, say 1.75tc, be good for double figure fish with the odd 20 (if I'm lucky)?

yes i would say they were fine you could even go to lower test curve. I have got Pete Springates old rods they have a test curve of about a 1.5lb I use them for all my floater and margin work they are excellent a really nice through action. these rods are about 30 years old pete caught 30 plus fish from wraysbury 1 on them. Remember years ago people never had more powerfull rods you only need powerfull rods for casting. I wouldnt recomend them for snag fishing though.

Thanks for that - I'm thinking of the Grey's 1.75lbers.

Most places I fish don't hold many snags, and I tend not to fish near them anyways.

From my carping experience I've found the smaller fish scrap more than the doubles, although the biggies do plod on for a lot longer.

Andy the Greys are fine i use my Prodigy's in 1.5 and 1.75Ib for floater work or margin fishing with no problems have landed fish to over 16Ib. I usually target the Carp in this weather then move on in the evenings to the river for the Barbel.

I use wychwood 1.5tc barbel rods for carp fishing, its much nicer than using my 2.75lb rods. Even a 5lb fish puts a good bend in them.

Have used my Barbel rod for method fishing in the past and found it more enjoyable than 'hauling' in carp with a 2.75t.c rod.
Just my opinion.

Thanks. Went to Fan lodge and caught 5 carp from 5 to 8lbs. Good scraps from all. Next dilema - do I use these rods at somewhere like Highfield? I know there's no snags but anyone know how a 20 plus carp fights? Just in case I do hook one!!!!!

By the way I got the Greys Prodigy's. Look like they are a tip action rod according to my friend who saw me play the 8lber - they should bend through to the butt, shouldn't they???????

i remember back when a 2lb tc rod was the norm and a 2.75 was "a bit of a stick"!!.....i aint that old neither!

mind you, i used to carry round 3 pairs of different rods (margins/medium/long) whereas i find i can "get away" with 1 rod now.....

Oh, wanted to add that I just bought a 1?lb test curve to go with a 1?lb tc that I already had. Great sport for early doubles!

Andy which model is your Prodigy. They have a powerful but section. That comes into play the more pressure you apply.

Where you based. I keep meaning to fish Fan Lodge for the Tench.

Bryan - I'm near Chorley. I've got the Prodigy Specialist 1.25 and 1.75lb tops.

I'm fishing 15lb line through them - I know it seems a bit OTT but..... although my clutch is set as it should be. Did some Bass fishing in the States last year - I think someone forgot to tell them about balanced tackle. 60lb braid on a rod that had the action of a #7 fly rod!!!!

Not caught a tench from Fan lodge yet although plenty were rolling last Saturday - until the sun came out.

i'd have no qualms about fishing for carp to mid 20's with a 1.75 as long as it's a decent rod which the greys is, i've landed a close to 20 carp on a 1.25 avon.

Thanks for the responses guys - looks like I haven't made a mistake. If I get a 20 this year (which is this years task) I'll get in on the forum.

Will keep you up to date with my fishing.

Beacon view this weekend for carp. Will probably get a Sturgeon! Will try me best

I got myself the Specialist and it is a more tippy rod than the Specimen or the Barbels which have a more through action. If you want to check them out i could always meet you somewhere like Heapy No 1 as i am in Blackburn.

Thanks for the offer Bryan. I got the rods from Carters in Preston and have used them once so I don't think they would take them back. I remember in the shop nearly lifting the guy off the floor when the rod was at as much pressure as I could get on. Looking straight down the rod it looked like a good bend. Maybe I just need to get a BIG fish on! Hey if they snap with a biggie I'll send 'em back - LOL.

Do you fish No 1 alot? If so what's it like for fish and cars - I remember a few years ago they were being broke in to?
