I been fishing for Tench allot this year using a 1.75TC float rod, but I've noticed I get allot of hook pulls due to the soft action of the rod. There seems to be a gap in the market for float rods designed just for tench. What rods do you use?

1.75 lbs TC!!! That's a bit over the top isn't it? I have used such rods for pike fishing

Might I suggest you are getting the hook pulls due to the stiffness of the rod. What size hooks and strength lines are you using?

For float fishing I use the Drennan Tench Float. For legering a Harrison Fishing Magic Concept is ideal.

The Drennan Tench Float is the best float fishing rod of its type ever designed.

There`s plenty of rod`s for the job out there, just look for a carp waggler that`s got a nice easy action and is rated to lines of about 5lb

Ron i had a look at the drennan tench float last year and found the latest model a bit pokerish for average sized fish (4lb-6lb) ive been told the older model`s were a lot better.

Ive used a maver jurrasic match for the last few season`s and for the money it`s been great but im not sure they still make it,theres the maver nembo power thats rated a little less than the jurrasic and comes in a 15ft version that im looking at for next year.
Im hopeing the extra few feet will add to the shock absorsion and it will be good as a river stick float rod for chub and barbel.

I have recently caught lots of tench in the 3/2 to 5 lb bracket using 5 lb line and 4 lb hooklength. Hooks down to 16. The Tench Float Mk III performed perfectly.

It might be a tad more powerful than the Mk I due probably to a different formulation of carbon.

Derbyshire: best beer, best cheese, best puddings.
I use my John Wilson avon 1.25lb test curve, superb as I've mentioned before, covers so many techniques in one rod. I've never suffered a hook pull using this and agree that pulls are going to be down to the stiffer action on your chosen rod.

Last Tench session I used Maxima 10lb mainline (A bit hefty I know but the venue contains carp to 20lb at least) with about 8 - 10ft of berkley vanish 6lb flourocarbon holding the float direct through to the size 14 Drennan super specialist barbless hook. Worked a treat, the berkley vanish is incredibly thin for the strength and very supple for flouro with little memory either, superb for hook lengths and float fishing with stepped up tackle.

I use a Silstar tench/carps rod, takes up to 6lb line. Use last Tuesday and had one of the best days fishing for along time. Handles 2.1/2 tench no problems along with 1lb roach. Had carp to 7lb on it.

You might want to look at the Prodigy Specialist it comes with 2 tips a 1.25lb and a 2lb top section. It's a nice looking rod with a lifetime guarantee for just ?99.99p.

I use a couple of 1lb tc Fox 12ft Specialists. Most of my Tench fishing has been less than 50 yards (so I don't need to cast far) and for fish up to only 5lb plus in relatively snag free water.

I would think a pair of 1.5lb tc rods would do for most of the country. They're a bit over the top for up north though.

For float fishing I've got a Drennan tench Float, a Graham Philips Tench Float and a Preston Innovations Carbonactive 15-17. They are all up to the job and great fun to play tench on but I prefer the extra length of the Carbonactive usually fishing it at 15 feet.

For legering i use 1 1/4 harrisons for short range work and 1 3/4 harrison interceptors for longer range work.

For fishing Wilstone with caster I would normally use 5lb hooklinks and size 14 hooks on the 1 3/4.

For short range work I'll go as low as 3lb and 18 hooks on the 1 1/4 if there is no weed about.

For feeder fishing I use two 12" 1.5lb Shimano Stradic specimen rods, discontinued now but I love them that much that I would sell me granny for another pair. As for float fishing I use a Leeda 8000 series 13' 1.75lb TC specimen float (also discontinued). Sounds like a beast I know but this is my favourite rod of all time, you can fish hooklenghts as light as 2.5 lb with it and the heaviest i've gone is 8lb straight through and it would still take more. I'd sell the wife for another one of these !
