Hi there,

I Can't decide between the JW 1 1/2lb Avon or the 1 3/4lb Barbel Rods. Any suggestions? I just want a good all round rod that can handle fishing the River Swale and smaller rivers.

If your looking at the signature system Michael, then the Avon is 1 1/4lb rated. Very good rod and I use mine on the Ouse but not knowing the pace and size of the rivers you fish, I can't really comment.

Hi ByNasty,

Sorry typing mistake - going test curve blind. The rivers I fish could be described as a medium pace and size. Just started fishing again after a few years break and the old match rod seems a bit light for the rivers I am fishing now. I was just wanting a take anywhere rod, and the reviews I have read on the site seem to be good for the John Wilson offerings. Does a 1/2 lb extra tc really make a difference?

I would say half a pound TC makes a lot of difference, if you are targeting barble I would go for the Barble rod for the Swale as I have found the avon too light for barble fishing. However if your targeting chub more then the avon should be okay.

I and others I know use the 1 1/4lb avon signature for barbel and smaller carp. The heaviest tip will cope with some sections of the Trent in Derby and with the extra length from the extension it is an awsome rod with enough power to draw big fish away from snags and through the current.

My advice would be the 1 1/4lb version!

1 1/4 signature cracking rod use it a lot on the severn but alway,s a bit wary when the bigger stamp of barbel are about or when the rivers pulling through. very reluctant to use it on the ribble were the barbel are abit more aggresive on the take.
seen the 1 3/4 in action and quite impressed will get one when the price drops
think if you had both all angle would be covered might get a good deal if you got both at once.

Thanks for all your comments. Went to the local tackle shop today and their advice was "well we stock the barbel version and theres no real difference between the two so you might as well buy this one". So really helpful as normal! On a plus I have found both rods a ?59.98 at Nimpopo website so I could go down the lines of buying both. Its a shame you cant just buy one and then the top section for the other and really have a one rod does all.

You can Michael but its not the Wilson rod. Greys do a Prodigy Specialist this comes with a 1.25Ib and a 1.75Ib top ideal for Chub and Barbel. Price is ?99. Ted Carters in Preston also do free delivery on there Greys rods.

you don't get the quiver tops with the greys specialist, just the avon tops.... have got a greys specimen on order, 1.5+2lb tops... was hoping to use it for the fish in sat/sun.. but the shop are waiting for greys to get 'em in.... not a happy bunny...

I have the Wilson 1 and a quarter test Avon. I have landed carp from lakes to 19lb8oz, from the Severn to 18lb13oz plus giant Teme barbel and chub but size does not matter with this bit of kit, monster gudgeon, mini-perch, fighting bleak...the Wilson handles them all and gives you the most tactile playing action of any stick i have tried. Tina Turner wrote a song about this rod ;-)

Oops!at least you can get the bits tho.
I have a 1.5lb prodigy i used on the ribble fish-in and ordered a 2lb test from daves@middlewich but then noticed the specimen which i thought looked better as i rarely use the quiver tops; if the specimen doesn't come in on time, i may just get the 2lber for the time being ... bugger the expense... just don't tell the wife!!!
btw, what kind of leads can you lob with the 2lb top? the lads are saying we'll need 5-6oz if theres a good flow on the trent... I haven't used owt that heavy on my 2+3/4test carp rods!

The 2 will cast them but you havve to build the cast slowly. Just dont expect to hit the horizon. Will do 30 yards no problem.
