If I'm making a fishmeal based paste for a certain upcoming fishing event can you use flavoured oils in the mix instead of a water based mix?

Will it hold together in the same way and break down properly?

p.s I would have experimented but I'm rather skint and can't afford to possibly waste precious ingredients.

Of course you can.

Many people use boilie mixes as paste and these often include 15ml to 30ml of oil in a 6 egg mix.

Thanks again!

I didn't make some stinky oil for nothing then!

Was thinking of using it as a glug but it's a bit thin so some in a paste and thicken the rest up a bit I reckon.

Er.... how do you thicken oil then?

To be honest, there's no need to thicken the oil. Too thick an oil may well restrict flavour leakage.

I think the type of oil and it's saturation point (the point at which it solidifies) is more important.
I would try using egg instead of water though. It will bind much better.

Try and get the paste so it's just tacky.

Another tip would be - if you're going to freeze your paste, put it in an air tight back, as usual, but flatten it into a mini pancake shape. It will thaw out a little quicker when you need to use it.

I'm certanly not a bait guru but there are a few on here who might be able to help you further.

When you use oil in a paste I find it best to use CSL instead of water. This is best if you freeze the paste before use.

In the end I've got a good oily paste that stinks and should hold round a hookbait just fine. I think.
My array of baits for this weekend is getting silly now I must stop.
