Have just acquired a couple of very nice examples of early B James Mk IVs (one Avon and one Carp). Any tips for keeping them in A1 condition? In particular, are there any dangers of cracking/drying out if kept indoors? Any help appreciated. Thanks

If they have the bags with them, hang them vertically in a cool dry place by the loop at the end.

In a climate such as the UKs split cane rods should be OK. I took two split cane fly rods to South Africa in 1967. Thre years later both of them shattered due to the dry air.

AndyI think there is an article about rejuvinating old rods in this weeks Country Life magazine. It might be worth checking it out. Not sure if it is on split cane or not though.

Never attempt to have old cane rods re-whipped or re-varnished in any way.

They lose their value.

Frothey, As we're talking 10 footers I was thinking more in terms of beans.

Sounds as if the main point is to avoid drying them out too much by keeping them in the centrally heated house for months on end. Keep them vertical too?

Thanks for your help guys.
