The GSA groups (Gloucestershire Specimen Anglers...) been around for a while, but I dont think they're as 'high profile' as the DVSG

Starting a local group sounds a brilliant idea. Plus telling tour missus your going to the Aylesbury Fishing and Beer Lovers Group monthly meeting is a good excuse to get down the pub and talkabout fishing, women, and by last orders , put the world to rights.
Seriously, is it relatively easy to start a group and keep the administrative side i.e. financial side at a reasonable level.

Monk I would love to form the BASG (Bristol Avon Specimen Group), but I seem to be the only Bristolian on FM.
How many members do you need to be recognised as a group?
Only got one so far, me!

maybe a few more than just you mate, 3s OK, you could get your granny and mother in law to join, actually I`m sure there used to be a Bristol and Avon Specimen group many years ago?

Just put an ad in one of the local papers, Bristol used to be an angling hive at one time, check out the local papers for an angling columnist, they are always short of edit

It is still a hive Monk, but the Bees are on the comercials, until late autumn when they return to plunder the huge bream shoals!
It's all changed mate, all the local papers report are the ton-up carp catches!

Just read The Monks interesting article on forming groups.

I have a couple of questions as Im a total newbie to this side of angling.

Are people like secretaries, chairmen, etc required to form a group, or is it possible to have more informal arrangements?

What is an inaugural meeting?

Sorry for the dumb questions!!

dont rodie, play guitar myself John, I was actually on stage on tuesday night doing a spot.

Hi George ans inaugeral meeting is simply the first meet nothing else, its just a posh way of saying it and yes a secretary is handy to have in a group, if for nothing else but to arrange meetings, chairman are not usually neccessary as they only really organise order at the meetings, best trying to keep things as informal as possible, although an events organiser come secretary can be useful if you wish to put a few events together and a president can be useful as a figurehead, it must however be someone very experienced and respected, for my own group our first president was the late Richard Tomlinson, a known angler in specialist circles, the only other president we ever had was Eric Hodson. You dont have to have any officials though providing members all pull together but you usually need some type of organiser though.

If you were schizophrenic and then all 4 or 5 of you could start a specimen group and you could share ideas etc. with yourself

Actually DB what you could do is form a group with two fictitious members ands as real people join you could simply say the Fictitious ones had died or something. Initially it would be expensive buying rounds at the meetings, since Fictitious members don`t have any money, but on the plus side, they dont drink either, so you would get drunk quite quickly. As new members here about the group and join, you simply send apologies in for the Fictitious, until such time as you decide to kill them off. An additional benefit from having Fictitious members is that they are likely to vote for the same things as you, if they dont then it is likely you may need professional assistance?
