i have three daiwa airbail reels (the arms are hollow) that i use for pike fishing while using them yesterday i found that the bailarms on 2 of them had cracks in them that were causing the line to become chaffed,i found the chaffs because i always run the line through my fingers when reeling in as a check for damage if i hadnt noticed i could have left hooks in fish,i urge anyone with these reels to check the bailarms on their reels for any cracks that will damage the line

Good post.

I had to look up the airbails because I haven't seen them before. Is there a mechanical advantage in using a hollow bailarm or is it a design selling point?

have four airbail reels,Daiwa Capricorns my bale arms are ok ive just checked them since reading your post,it would be a good idea to inform Daiwa about the problem, because more and more of their reels have the airbail ,which makes reel lighter i think,,
they might change the reels ,worth a try
