Good work Lee. Your rigs got me thinking. I have been using Korda hybrid this season and your flouro/braid combo rig has a certain similarity to it. Have you used it and come up with an improved version? Perhaps we could hound Korda into producing a 10 or 12lb version!

Sounds good to me!

They may even supply us with a bucket full as payment in lieu!

Lee, good read mate. Lots of interesting stuff there to ponder.

The bit that interests me most is the spooking caused by flash and sparkle.
I remember John Bailey writing on his observations whilst diving, how even at depth shiny line and hooks would flash unnaturally.

I fish a lot on the surface and quickly realised that using matt hooks and lines solved most of these problems.
The way I fish, the line and hook couldn't be more obvious but the fish dont seem to care overmuch.

You cant be 100% certain of anything in fishing , but I think you'll find disguise may not be as necessary as you think.

Those super specialist barbel hooks are good, not for the teflon mallarky but because they are dark and matt. I like them a lot.

I have used super spades religiously over the last 7 or 8 years but have moved onto drennan barbel hooks this season. They rock but are bloody expensive.
Lee, I have emailed Korda about the hybrid breaking strains. I will let you know what they come back with.

Who else could come up with a title for himself as a Carbologist (o Brilliant.

You have done it again Lee with part four of your Carbology article. Excellent reading and informative to boot.

One thing that you are going to have to do sooner or later is to write a book on your exploits so far. You can do it.

I always wanted to be a gynocologist but I really am not cut out for that type of career prefering to remain a happy amateur!

So I suppose a carbologist is the next best thing seeing as they both end up messing with and smelling of fi........leave it swordsy and get some lunch!

Mmmmmmmm, Kippers I think!

It is very interesting what you had to say about Fox Mega Silk. Last season I used it a lot the main reason being the fact that it is a low diameter allowing you to use it with small hook i.e. size 10's Raptors. But as with you, after losing several fish I have tried to find an alternate. I am currently using Stoneflow braid but with mixed results. It isn?t as low a diameter and not as easy to knot.
I use braid main line and am not sure about using fluorocarbon hook length but I might give it a go.
The cost of trying new hook length material is prohibitive so any info from other anglers is always welcome. If you or anybody else fined the Holy Grail of hook length I?m sure we will all be very happy.

There is a review on this site about Virage Flourocarbon. The fella in question was less than impressed with its qualities. Can you enlighten us please Lee.

Its quite limp and easy to knot plus when I tested it to destruction it kept most of its breaking strain but hey thats fishing innit? one mans meat is another mans poison. Steph horak and Phil Smith still use Mitchell 300's, they like them and get on with them whilst others left them behind 20 years ago (the reels).

(Hello my name is Lee and ime a carbellholic, it is 2 weeks since my last barbel). Youve excelled yourself once again, fantastic line drawings to boot. I am particullarily interested in your setup for the clear water general purpose rig where you use tungsten putty on your swivel? I use my putty in dabs along the trace on the hook side of the swivel (enabling me to get the trace down on the bottom quickly). Do you feel any advantage to using putty on the swivel only. My feelings would be that possibly it might restrict the free rotation of the swivel thus negating the need for the swivel, or maybe you might be wanting to create a pop up effect as in your diagram using cork with the elipse pellets. You have got me thinking and I will be certainly be tying up some of your traces and using them tomorrow night, I can see that using a setup similar to yours with the cork sandwiched pellets would create a wafter effect in a swim with shallow water in streamer weed. Any thoughts?
