It might be worth a few sessions just baiting up but not fishing. Get the fish used to eating a certain food in the same spot?

Stuart,
On our local canal the carp really start showing and feeding after 7.00pm in the summer. This is generaly when the day outers are gone and the area quietens down, no kids throwing things in and dogs diving in after them. As well as the leftover sandwiches and crisps being thrown in on the way home. A lump of crust floating on the surface will usually bring in a few before it gets too dark.

One thing I would say (from experience) is that canals, like rivers, are not the place to test baits. Use a bait that has worked elsewhere, that you are confident in.
