The controvesy surrounding the capture of the 13lb eel has saddened me a lot, it does nothing for the future of angling.

It got me thinking just what would cause "brothers of the angle" to act in this way.....and i'm afraid i could only come up with one answer...CARP!

So, my mind got to thinking if i could remove them from British angling would i?

Sorry to those who love catching them....and i am one, but for the greater good then yes i would remove them........a close second is Barbel!

My question is....what fish would you remove from the equation for the greater good of angling as a whole?

I would not remove any Paul, as I believe that every fish has a role to play in the big picture ;-)

I would'nt/could't dump any!

One national body that has a final say in what's stocked where.

Wrong species caught in wrong venue through illegal/mischievous stockings = venue CLOSED! Can only be done with lakes but, thats where the problems lie!

Oh, ok then - BREAM! Worthless, useless lumps of pike/cat bait that piscatorially say: "Oh, I'm hooked, I'll give up now!"

hardly useless malc, they are a natural fodder for pike etc,are indiginous to britain(unlike mudsuckers) and an awful lot of people enjoy catching them.

The problems with these two species (carp/barbel)are twofold.

1..Overstocking.

2..Certain types of angler.

It has even been said on this forum by dedicated barbel anglers that it makes a nice change to talk about something else.
Just talking about them is a different situation but let's face it, we have had them rammed down our throats this year.
Unwittingly, I suppose this is part of the problem.

Carp are okay, they just need to be monitored and managed a lot better than what they have been in the past. I have said it before, most anglers, even the dedicated carp angler does not want wall to wall carp.

I've never thought anything else but that Malc.
Unless I am on a wind up on bait box, even then there is an element of truth, slightly distorted of course (o

I also agree with you Baz ,I fish for carp but I feel that on the waters that I fish that the pleasure angler has pushed out ,10 lakes and all of them carp waters ,there used to be a lake for the pleasure angler but two years ago it was reshaped and is now another carp water ,more carp boys ,bloody unfair to my mind .

Trouble is Baz that if you remove carp or barbel the certain types that target them would move on to another species such as tench. Instead of being about removing a species of fish maybe this thread would be better suited if it concentrated on what type of angler would you like to see the extinction of. Mine would be first and formost the ones who feel they don't have to buy licences, daytickets and flout rules.

"what type of angler would you like to see the extinction of."?

The high and mighty, self-righteous, opinionated, "do-what-I-say not what-I-do", well healed can go fishing far-off places, whinging about others, close season supporting, keep-net banning airheads that don't think anyone else but them should be able to fish.

Thankfully they are a minority anyway and hopefully will very soon become extinct on their own.

I forgot to include the ones who's scales seem to weigh fish 30% heavier than mine despite the fish appearing to be of the same size (and on some occasions the same fish caught a week apart) It really is quite bizarre and the weeklies keep on publishing the photo's, unbelievable !!

I would not and could not remove any fish from the U.K for the greater good instead I would urge the angling media to show more realistic target fish and drop the world match record rubbish which is now bordering on the obscene.

Carp are a wonderful species but they aint "the Sun with fins on" and everything else does not revolve around them! The anglers fishing just for them need to wake upto the fact that not everybody would want to or is able to invest five years of their time chasing an individual fish, just so that they can bask in the reflected glory of their catch and reap the rewards of their toil.

In coarse fisherman last month(ish) in the section where the celebrity angler shows you his tackle besides the massive bait advertising and tackle show he made one comment that stuck "When I hook two-tone" Jesus Christ, I wouldnt want to hook the fat old bird if it was the last fish on the plannet it has no credibility anymore its been done to death as has the traveller.

They are non-targets they are EASY MEAT, its like Shagging a porn star, on the outside as you look in and think "Jesus how did that ugly bloke there manage to get a shag off her?" but when you think about it its all application of time, effort and financial resourses.

Get yourself a medical check up and a certificate saying you are disease free then simply aproach the chosen starlets promoter/manager and offer a four figure sum for a home video shoot or "pay" to appear in the next shoot, easily done!

and it is the same for the celebrity fish, they are so easily done the only thing that could possibly stop the determined angler catching any celebrity fish is the possibility they Kick the bucket before they find the celebrity boilie!

Mark says,
Trouble is Baz that if you remove carp or barbel the certain types that target them would move on to another species such as tench.

That's very possibly correct Mark.

I don't think that anglers like us lot have any say whatsoever in fish management, the breeders and fisherry owners seem to make that decision for us, which seems to be the crux of the problem.
Angling waters all over the country have been stuck in the same old rut for years.

I think the way forward now, would be to have more knowledgeable management teams running our waters, instead of jobs for the boys, who in my opinion, know less than what I do.

Far too many species are trying to be crammed into far too many little spaces.

I would go as far to say that no thought whatsoever is being given to the future of our waters, all that they seem to concentrate on is only what is flavour of the day.
