I’m surprised that no one’s commented on the full-page article in yesterdays Daily Mail. The article was about the guy who got thrown into the canal for riding his mountain bike over an angler’s pole then was ordered by the magistrates to pay the angler ?500 compensation for the damage caused to his equipment. When asked if he would be making a counter claim against the guys who throw him in he said he didn’t want to aggravate the situation any more as he would like to continue to ride on that part of the canal. What a pity he wasn’t a member of PETA?

Ahhh..but as we all know..canal paths are not cycle paths..and he would have been breaking the law!!

Makes a change - we had an incident with a cyclist when some of the SAFE coaches were on a stretch of canal in Stoke - a cyclist didn't just run over a pole - he slammed his front wheel down onto it - this whilst we were coaching young kids !!

Do cyclists still need a permit from BW to cycle on a towpath ?

They do need a permit to cycle on the towpath, but come on fellas....do we have any more right to be there as anyone else? i used to do a little mountain bike riding and i used to go on towpaths, in my neck of the wood they are possibly they safest way to ride......i always dismounted for a match and lifted my cycle over poles etc.......i rarely got thanked........theres two sides to every story.

I have been fishing on the canal at birmingham the last couple of monday eves, and all i can say is you Stand a good chance of getting run over by bikers. The speed the cycle at must be close to 20 mph and it is very dangerous on such a narrow path. But if you put tackle on the tow path you deserve to get it broken as its a public right of way.

Cyclist can now legally use towpaths, horses can’t, which is ironical because that’s what they were designed for in the first place. However, even if a right of way is obstructed you can’t break or damage the obstruction. You must get it removed through the legal system. i.e. you don’t admit that you did it on purpose. PW’s right there’s room for everyone, it’s still a pity though the cyclist wasn’t a member of PETA.

It all comes down to the sad loss of common courtesy and patience in this country.

You can picture the events. Cyclist wants to get by, the anger asks him to wait a minute. Cyclist has to go NOW and says so! Angler gets his hackles up and deliberately becomes obstructive. Cyclist gets very anoyed, tries to get by and breaks tackle. Other anglers see whats going on, cyclist legs it. Anglers give chase, catch him and lob him in the canal.

If only a bit of common sense and courtesy had prevailed it would probably have never happened. Even if someone starts having ago, usually little is gained by getting your gander up, so it's best to just smile and be polite.

If after that they break your pole, they are being totally unreasonable, so chuck 'em in with a clear conscience!

Sound like the ideal place for me to bivvy up for a week....

I'm sure the nocturnal badger sounds would keep unwanted bikers away !

Gary - are you intimating that Carp Angler sounds like a Badger at night?

Still if he's 'bivvied' up the cyclist would probably be worn out cycling up the gravel driveway well before he could get to the imposing mock Georgian doors. I've seen what these Carp guys call 'roughing it'!.

Seriously, perhaps if we took notice of Dave's comments, over the years the public pereption of us as Anglers might be better?.

No, he's saying that Carp Angler frightens badgers at night. He's scared me a few times I can tell you with his welcome note.

As in 'put it away and don't frighten the horse's'!

I thought the new Carp Anglers did things in a bigger way!

I was a very keen cyclist for many years as well as a keen angler. Yes idiot cyclists annoy me but so do idiot anglers.
On the Grand Union a few years ago I was with a mate on bikes. A big fat angler had his tackle out, pole across the tow path whilst he was on his mobile phone. When asked "excuse me" by my friend we got "F*** **f". I very nearly rode over his pole, & I don't just mean the one he used for fishing.
This is the thing that despairs me about the future of fishing as there do appear (as in many sports) to be an awful lot of D**k H***s who pick up rods.

I'm a keen mountain biker and angler David. AS you say, its the individual who is the problem, not the sport. I go out of my way to ask some anglers how they are doing-which is usually met with a grunt-best of it is, if I spared em 5 mins i could probably teach em a thing or two.....
I could easily lay this at the feet of the average canal matchman, but alas, it is alsoi the pleasure angler, and as Sedge has pointed out this week, the specialist angler...

If you fish a canal you should be prepared for people. Dont block the tow path as its a public right of way.
