they come up often on e-bay and the 500 series also fit at a pinch.(not 507/8)and i think that fishermans friend shop also do
a special match verion spool that might fit

Agree, most 500 series fits. It's been a standard that Abu have maintained all along. I think 1044 had chenille around the edge so avoid 503/505 types as they didn't.
