No not a new dance craze! Loaded our spools with some 6lb line with a view to baggin some nice Carp. The line keeps "Jumping off" the spool when we cast leaving birds nests. AARRGHH, what's wrong with it?!

Sounds like you might have overloaded the spool.
Typically, try to stop just below the lip of the spool. This will allow you the best possible cast with little or no overflow of line.

Hope this helps.

stick a lead on the end of it and cast as far across the lake as you can do this 9 or 10 times, should help cure it

In that case it is probably line twist.
you can do as Jason suggests, or alternatively get a Gardner Anti Twist lead (or two in different sizes) These are tied to the end of the line and cast . upon the retrieve the spinning action of the anti twist lead takes the twist out of your line.
