This is a very subjective question but in my humble opinion the best angler I have ever seen was Ivan Marks because I have never seen anyone demonstrate such pure fish catching ability. His rigs were on the whole very simple but he seemeed to possess the mind of a fish and could literally predict what the fish were going to do and catch them almost to order.
For pure angling ability Ivan gets my vote but who do you think is the best angler and demonstrated this ability to you?

Oh dear..Cue Ron.

Off down the library for me.

It would be the pub, but I hate crying into my beer.

The best angler I have seen in the flesh is Stuart Conroy, a first class match angler, very approachable, and excellent at demonstrating and coaching.

The best natural angler I have ever seen is my younger brother Jamie...truly amazing when he was a kid.

On roach and skimmers he was doing stuff 20 years ago I still cannot fathom now, he has a very analitical mind and seems to be at one with whatever he chooses to do.

That is the most difficult thing to state.

I have fished with some truly excellent anglers in my life.

But the sport has so many different disciplines. Probably the best fly fisher I have ever seen in action was Joan Wulff. The best match fisher - Billy Lane and the best all-round fish catcher - Tag Barnes.

And one of the best British still water fly fishers I have ever seen is Danny Peet, who is disabled and confined to a wheelchair.

If its float fishing you really mean then I too have watched and marvelled at Ivan Marks but I've watched others who are equally as good, Ken Giles was brilliant with a waggler on any river, John Sherwood with a stickfloat, Denis White who was just good at everything. Some of the lesser known anglers who specialised on the Warkickshire Avon could winkle fish out of a puddle and were wonderful to watch.

You don't see many good float anglers coming through nowadays because they never get to fish rivers competitively and when they do they tend to favour the pole, so I suppose its a dying art.

On the match side of things I've watched lots of them, and 1 stands out like a sore thumb.....Steve Gardener.......He must think like a fish.

I sat behind Topper Haskins a few times, whilst he was fishing "his" Crowquill Avon, Awesome!

Graham I agree, river fishing is a dying art! Not just float fishing.

Ivan's real forte was Bream from the Fens he seemed to be able to know how to feed and nick them off of other anglers at will. He was also a genius at carping and general angling from the southern Pits. On the float or on the lead Ivan could seemingly do it all.

John who are you looking at?

Ron,
Is that Danny Peet from Sheffield? Fished along side him as a boy before his accident and I lost a lifelong friend in the same crash.
If it is Im so pleased to hear he still fishes. Where is he now?

DB, I don't think John ever got over the fact that I had a cardboard car that went soggy in the rain. Maybe he is thinking about this and pondering the complications of driving such a splendid vehicle or maybe Matron was early with his pills tonight!
