Freezing weather carping

A mate of mine phoned and asked if I was up for some carping on Sunday.

I thought he was mad. Surely the fish won't move when we've had several freezing nights like recently?

He points out that one morning a couple of years ago he had two twenties out with frost on the ground, but overall, I don't think it's worth it.

do you?

Last winter I pulled a very nice, nay pristine 9lb common out on a very frosty sunday morning.
If it was the first frost then I would agree with you , but this weather seems to have settled in for a few days so it may be worth a go.

Myself and a mate, who is one of the carp lads fished a friendly match a number of years ago in the winter.

The canal had frozen over solid, we all drew pegs, and started to break the ice where we were fishing. We had all been fishing for about ten minuits when the mate turned up late.
He walked back to his van and came back with a pair of extension ladders over his shoulder. He pulled the ladders out and broke the ice on the far side of the cut (14 mtrs) o fcourse you can imagine the names he got called, an dthat he had just zeroed his chances.
He chucked one carp rod out with a madussa rig of different coloured maggots on it.
Believe this or not, within 15 minuits he caught a 12 mirror carp, tackled up and said see you all in the pub later lads.
He actually won that match.

And don't kid yourself that all the fish are in the deeper water when it gets cold. I have watched plenty in less than two feet of water, under the ice.

Also.
these icy conditions are the time when I love going out at night fish spotting through the ice. and the fish are very, very, active.

Do I think it's worth going out?

I've had several decent days fishing when the ice had to be broken.

You can have some good days in winter, even in the most severe weather, but you need a settled spell or an upward trend in the temperature. The actual temperature doesn't mean a great deal.

We have had three or four days and nights of cold icy weather now.
This could be favourable to us.

Used to do a lot of winter carping Woody, read my last piece in the New Specialist Angler magazine, you can pull carp out from under ice and they don`t have to be deep waters either, but you do need to pick your waters. Its often warm under the ice than on the bank. Very enjoyable fishing and a nice achievement when you catch, the longer sessions can be difficult though, best keeping sessions to under a month in the winter and keep the Samaritans phone number handy, the addition of a ruffe slapper in the bivvy helps get you through the quieter nights, if only to send her out for the odd curry.

Guess I'll just have to go and try then.

Wrap up warm in a ruffe slapper and see how we get on.

Last time a woman passed me and I was wearing my thick winter one-piece she said "You look warm. I wish I could come in there with you."

I answered "Sorry, love, but it tends to stain the lining."

Get's one piece - let you know how I get on. Blank again coming up.

Yes, I can.

I'll fish in the tank.

My mate's cried off now. "Too f****** cold." he says.

Nesh bugger, I've got Viking blood in my veins.

Winter carping can be very rewarding, in Feb 2004 I cought 7 carp in just over 3hrs using single baits, no freebies. I caught the biggest in the lake 16.5lb, not big by some standards, but these carp are all wildies and average about 5lb.

Wildies? really Antony! Yes single baits can give a significant edge in winter, providing you first find your fish of course, nice catch though mate.

Thanks for you reply. Yes, finding the fish is importent, fortunately this lake is only about 2.5 acers, and about 4ft deep. Fishing is limited to 60 pegs, half of which are no good to the carp angler, but the fish tend to spread out. Finding them is'nt too much of a problem. I admit I use the term wildies losely, but there is no record of carp stoking in this lake.

"Limited to 60 pegs " , What do you do when it`s a full house ?
Take turn`s to cast ? lol.

Les I think acers must be different to acres
2.5 acres would only be 5 or 6 swims

half of them were no good though, so its only 30 swims really......
