I used to wear glasses, but if you can, I'd recommend getting contact lenses. I know that's not possible with some sight defects, but if you tried them 'years ago' and didn't get on with them, try again - they're really good these days. Try two or three different types - they all 'feel' different.
Contacts don't get wet when it rains or steam up when you reach the pub, and you can't drop them in the water or sit on them!
If you can't wear them because of an astigmatism or some such, you're a bit knackered really; I suppose you could by some oversized clip-ons and get the scissors out....
