carp fishing only

as i said im new to fishing,when i here people say they are just fishing for carp,what sort of gear do you need,can you use the normel rod and reel,what sort of hooks do you use.it may sound a silly thing to ask you lot,but if i dont ask i wiil never learn,i use the pole,do i have to set the pole up to match the carp or what.
