Anguilla mossambiqua.

Oh I forgot to add:

Crucian Carp: 3lbs 6oz.

I often think that big fish lists are not a true indication of how proficient an angler is. All it means is that an angler may have had access to a particular water at a particular time.

For instance, some of the best roach fishers I have met have never had a fish over 1 1/2 lbs in their lives. But they can teach you a hell of a lot about catching big roach.

Completely agree. A big fish list is just that - a list of the biggest fish an angler has caught. It has little bearing on proficiency. You can only catch what is in front of you, and driving to the other end of the country to catch a bigger fish doesn't make it a more noteworthy capture, or make you a better angler.

Quite true Stuart. I've never been one for trying to break a personal best. If I had, I just may have caught a hell of a lot bigger fish than I have.

I do like to try and get the best out of the waters I fish locally however.

And as regards game fish, well size just does NOT come into it. It's more a matter of HOW the fish was caught, not how big it was. And there is also the question of condition. These days I get very exdited about fish which are in superb condition, especially game species.

The biggest trout I ever caught was a rotten looking fish. I didn't enjoy catching it. Superbly conditioned fish that fight like hell give me a much bigger buzz these days.

Ron, I didn't list any of the game fish I have caught for that reason.

I do like to break personal bests, and take great satisfaction in achieving it - but not at all costs.

As you say, the condition of the fish is important, as is trying a new technique, tempting one when conditions are lousy, or figuring out a way of presenting a bait to make an unlikly capture possible - all satisfying aspects to any capture.

Interesting this, shows that most of us have caught p.b's that are good fish, but not exceptional by national standards.

To me this emphasises the folly of chasing fish that are viewed as specimens on the national scale. The view being provided, of course, by the headline grabbing weekly press.

Derbyshire: best beer, best cheese, best puddings.
Hmm...

From memory:

Carp (common) - 10lb n' a bit
Pike - 12 n' 3qtr lb
Tench - 4lb ish
Roach - over 1lb approaching 2lb maybe
Crucian - about 2 n' bit lb
Barbel - 8 n' half lb
Zander - 4lb ish
Bream - 5 n' half lb
Chub - 4 n' half lb

Shows how good I am at keeping records, I just weigh them if they look biggish even then I only really look at the lb figures and then its either plus a quarter, half or 3 quarter. Accuracy is my middle name.

:0)

Edited to add my best Chub.
