Derbyshire: best beer, best cheese, best puddings.
Depends what size carp you're after and what the waters like.

I may be tempted to use 6lb line but as I say depends on the average carp size there.

Are you fishing up in the water or on the bottom?

If on the bottom then no need for a chunky float, a small / medium size waggler will suffice.

Also depending on the distance you're casting and on the depth you're fishing at try just hooking the chunks directly and striking on the take, much more exciting in my opinion.

any size carp really average is about 4-8lb

am aiming to put a bed of hemp and sweetcorn and cat meat down first and then fish on the bottom

still stick with a size 6 hook ????

Dean, i used to only fish cat meat for Carp Kitekat Rabbit and Chicken was the best in GRAVY had to be in gravy mind. the meat is softer in gravy than the jelly but they like it 50% more, but it took me ages to learn the art of keeping it on the hook whilst casting but it is lethal once they get a taste for it and at 30p a tin cheap as chips, i allways fished 3 pieces two up the line one on the hook size 10 super specialist you have to pull the hook through it and turn it round so it doesn't pull through, fished on a light float use the weight of the meat to cock the float a bit, hit the lift bites.

Till the float lifts, thats the trick to telling if it is still on, fish a light 2bb Crystal float with two No10s either side plumb your depth leave it 4" over cant go wrong.
If it is taken it either sales away or you get a lift bite but more often than not it will twitch, lift a bit then sail away, fishing a light float is the key.

Try using 3 bits on the hook using a baiting needle, size 6 hook. Can be a bugger to keep on the hook if using rod and line, much easier with a pole.

The trick to keeping it on the hook is to fish it with the pole so you can just ship it out gently and lower it into the water. I have fished it like this and usually in the margins so casting is not a problem and im sure fishing tight to the reeds is just if not more productive than fishing open water. hope this helps.

PS heavy elastic is a must with this method to keep the carp from bolting into the reeds.

In the 60s/70s we used to use Kit-e-Kat mixed to a paste with flour --and caught loads of fish .....
Also try Campbells Meat Balls and use the gravy in your groundbait

Watch out when fishing any type of meat baits on waters that have public access, keep your bait in a sealed box, other wise it will become some effing mutt?s breakfast!

It happened to me last summer, I had carefully cubed up, spiced and fried 3 tins of luncheon meat, Id only been fishing about half an hour when someone?s mongrel wolfed the lot down while I was behind a tree having a pee.

The first boilies I made were Kit-E-Cat mixed with Weet-A -Bix plus 6 eggs ,pissed the first wife off with the smell but they worked .
