What are the biggest hooks a chub could realistically get into its cavernous mouth? I ask this as paste works very well for me but I was missing bites. I tried using tiny hooks but they didn't hold the paste very well.

Hook size is determined, in the main, by the bait you are using, the bigger the bait the bigger the hook. Theres not much to be gained by using big hooks for the likes of maggots and a size 14 is quite adequate for chub whereas a size 4 isn't too big for flake or paste.

Hooks for chub?

Depends what bait you are using the size of the fish involved and the presence of snags.

For single maggots, I have taken 6lb chub on 18 super spades. For crust and lobs - sized 4 Super Specialists eyed or similar.

A sized 2 hook looks small alongside the mouth of a 2 lbs chub.

If you are using soft paste, make sure the point of the hook is exposed slightly.

J.Wilson on Discovery right now. He is useing a size 2 hook with a single lobworm.

A lot of my chubbing in the last couple of years has been done with a size 10, with a single Trigga pellet on a band. The bait has been much larger than the hook, but I caught more chub and barbel like this.

Experiment and you may be surprised, but keep the hook clear of the bait.

A single maggot i use 18,2maggots i use 16 and 3 maggots i use 14,breadflake and paste i use either a 4 or 6,and a lobworm usually i opt for a 8 or 10.

And Ron,i always bury my hook in my paste,if the paste is soft enough the hook will easily penetrate the paste into the chub`s mouth.I`ve been doing this for years with lots of success.Whats the reason for exposing the hook slightly?.Regards.

Yes Yoggy I also bury the hook into the paste so that it is fully covered. But then I feel for the hook point and slightly, very slightly leave a tad of it exposed.

I reckon you get a cleaner strike.

It's probably not important with soft paste but the reason I do it is just me.
