I am selling my cane rod collection one by one on ebay. I'm not using them and it seems a waste just looking at the bags hanging on the wall.

But the post office refuses to accept packages longer than 1.5 metres. Any tips on alternative couriers? I'm in SW London

jon....the missus and me have just sold a pair of rods on e-bay.we wrapped the rods up in bubble wrap then placed them in thier tubes and wrapped/taped the tubes up as well.they were wrapped up tighter than a mummy`s nob!!!.i was bloody amazed/puzzled and furious that the royal mail wouldnt take them so we had to post them with parcelforce 48hr service with insurance etc.... ?13.95 per rod. its a lot i know but at least there will be some comeback if the things arrive damaged or get lost, heaven forbid!!!
we did find other couriers online but felt that parcelforce was our best option and also the fact that i did 13 years service with them and i know how they operate etc...
hope this is of some help.

Jon,

Do you know anyone that works for a company that would have a contract with a carrier such as TNT, parceline etc.. that could send it for you ?

I can send from work any size package up to 20kg via TNT next day for less than ?10 (forget the exact rate, and actualy I can send it for free if the boss dont get to know!)

I think the "man off the street" rate for TNT is around ?15 next day service.

My local PO will not take them either....the 1.5m rule etc.....BUT!
By paying the postage at the local PO and then taking the package direct to the local sorting office they deliver them......at least in my locality......might pay to check it out?

The 1.5m rule applies because 90% of evening collections are done in "Escort" size vans and simply they struggle to fit in the van when fully laden with mail. The collections from local Post Offices are carried out by Royal Mail "letters" and NOT Royal Mail "parcelforce",which is a completely different company now.
As Paul rightly says ALL sorting offices WILL accept over-sized parcels. The over-sized parcels are loaded onto either Artic or 7 ton lorries, and all parcels are then sorted and delivered from "parcelforce" depots and NOT Royal Mail "letter" offices.

I take longer / heavy items direct to a main post office, they seem to take things in their stride and have always managed to get items posted. Normally they accept the parcel on behalf of Parcelforce, the cheapest rate is normally the one with 3 to 4 day delivery, but still insured.

Just a point..Most people seem to think that oversized packages are called "parcels",this is not the case.It all depends on the weight of the item.You can still post a package as big as a fridge,and as long as the weight is ok you can send it "letter-post",,this is then a "packet",and visa versa with smaller items.The ordinary postie who visits you on his bike NEVER delivers PARCELS,no matter how small or big they are,these are ALL packets,ALL oversized,overweight packets and parcels are delivered ...........by me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hope you all got that!! ;-}

Yoggy,
A lot of this misunderstanding is due to some of the smaller sub-post offices not being fully aware of what the various services are that they actually sell.

Nick,to be honest mate,it completly slipped my mind when we spoke regarding those rods!!.My mistake!.

Even though the counter staff are just "sticking to the rules" at these post offices, nearly ALL collection posties WILL take them regardless, myself included!!!

Phil, its down to training mate, more and more sub-offices are closing down and those that still operate, employ "part-timers",apparently is more cost effective!!!!,unfortunatly its the service that suffers!!
