Chaps,

Have got the Drennan Spinflex for light spinning etc, but wanted recommendations for a decent jerkbait rod to chuck the bigger lures for the bigger fish.

Have got an abu ambassadeur c3 5001 primed - just need the rod to go with it?

Any help much appreciated.....

Bob, I've seen all those rods - plus quite a few more. That's why I was after some specific recommendations or advice on which rod people own/use.

I cant see much difference between the ones for ?60 and the ones for ?130. But that may be because I have a small brain.

Gus,
The reel you have will be suitable for most lures down to say 15gramme, if it is well maintained and does not really enter the equation except that you will require a trigger grip rod. The rod is a completley personal thing, ask yourself this question:
Is it to fish canals, rivers and lakes or big deep reservoirs.
If you intend to fish the smaller waters then a rod from the lighter end of the range would be better (and less tiring), the heavier rods and lures are better suited to deep reservoirs.
A lure / jerk / jig rod that has caught my eye and is suitable for the smaller jerk baits is the Rosemeijer Gentle Jerk rod, which sells for about ?35. It is 6'6" long and casts up to 80gramme, it is very light and slim and I am sure would also cast larger lures and bucktails.

That's well cheap, I was going to suggest Toothy Critter make a good one but I hardly use jerkbaits these days. Dave Lumb's website has links to a separate site about ABU reels and how to maintain them.

You might fine a bigger reel's better for jerks like the 6500 (next size up) series.

Agreed 6500 or 6501 if you want left hand wind.

My jerkbait rod is a bit of a beast, it's the Harris bulldogger and can cast chunks of wood up to 200g (about 7oz), I'd have put it in the entry level bracket but I know jack shit really, Tim Kelly of the LAS gave it a good review and he seems to know a bit more than jack,, well you get the picture. If/when I upgrade I'll probably opt for the Sledgehammer by Dave Lumb. If you want to chuck magnum dawgs and suchlike go for something with enough back bone to launch them.

60 quid for that Fox Predator Jerk is a good suggestion. I've got the Fox Jerkmaster, which is half the price again these days and that's a nice rod to use. I dare say the Predator Jerk will be a substantial bit of kit.

A warning about Fox rods, I had a Piker Jerk (?40) and had to send it back. Reason: the handle had been downgraded, so the Ambassedeur 6500 I was using wobbled about, totally unacceptable! My mate had one of the originals and that was fine! They have done the same with their bait rods, they now only take big pit reels, even the ones designed for fishing Fen Drains! Rubbish......

Glue a strip of cycle inner tube to the reel foot. That usually stops reels wobbling in reel seats.

Although you would expect a seat on a lure rod to accept a multiplier without problems!

the wychwood rogue jerkbait rod is a decent jerk rod as is the fladen maxximus.the wychwood is around ?30 and the fladen ?40ish.
i`ve got the older model fox piker jerk and the reel fitting is spot on,unlike the newer model.the original fox jerkmaster is more suitable for nettle thrashing than lure fishing (in my opinion).
greys have a jerkbait rod that looks pretty reasonable too,at ?60 ish.
