This is the famous painting by Walter Dendy Sadler of the monks fishing for their supper in the stew pond - ca 1875

I first saw this picture hung in **** Walker's Fishing Hut on the Upper Ouse near Beachampton. Walker loved the picture. The characters depicted in this painting are classic.

I've always thought that our monk looked like one of them.

So which one of them is our Monk?

The one with the rod?

There is no doubt that Dendy Sadler was an angler. There are two more of his pictures that portray angling, "The Pegged Down Match" and "Isaak Walton"

These would make nice pictures for any angler's study.

The one you like Ron is titled Thursday, have you seen Friday? they enjoy their catch. An impressive collection of prints.
There's another called Habet, my personal favourite which I'm very temted to buy. It might infuriate one or two Pike anglers amongst us.

Why should it infuriate them Bob?

Seems to have infuriated some already, on the right of the picture, Bob.

It was said tongue in cheek Ron, a nice Pike, obviously dead being dragged over a stone floor, these days it would be frowned upon.

Looks more triumphant to me Fred, he knows he's getting fed tonight.

Just out of interest, in that picture "pegged down" what is there missing?

Keepnets. They didn't have them then, which is why the close season was introduced. I know it's only a small snapshot of fishing then, but it was fact.

Thank you for that Fred.
