What situation warrants the need for a back lead, long range, short range, margin?
Or is it good practice to use them all the time?

if you are getting a lot of liners, shouldnt you be fishing closer?

i rarely use them, you have to take into account whats inbetween you and the rig. no point having a backlead on if theres a weedbed between you and the rig, for instance....

Ah, but a flying backlead could still be useful in those circumstances. Not that I've ever used them, though I've no doubt they can give you an edge.

unless you want to pin the line down under the rods for a different reason.

1) Avoiding pike bite offs.
2) Avoiding swans.
3) Easier to play and net fish close in.

Back-leads help on the rivers too, particularly in heavy flow or following a lot of rain when all sorts of rubbish is coming through and constantly snagging the line.

avoiding swans only works if you dont chuck old baits in the edge!
