Now spring is here and the nights are getting lighter I keep a rod and reel made up with a float on a pole winder in a rod sleeve for those times when you suddenly get an hour or 2 and need to make the most of the time.

Mine set up is a Drennan carp waggler and Shimano stratic reel with 6lb line, the flaot is a waggler but can be quickly changed and the hook can be swapped and a new one tied on in seconds.

Anyone else keep a rod and reel set up for those "get away" times?

Yes.
Maver 13ft Reactorlite with Shimano Sendo 2500 reel with 4lb line, 2bb waggler, 3lb hook length and 16 hook, all ready to go. Secured with rod bands and in a quiver. Also Shimano 9-11 beastmaster feeder (not the heavy commercial one) with Shimano exage 3000 reel, 7lb line. Not setup yet as not used it. Again fits in the quiver which has landingnet handle and brolly. Also goes one Korum chair with accessories, side tray, baitwaiter, feeder arm and rod butt rest. Also landingnet head. Small bag with some feeders, some floats and hook box containing weights, hooks, swivels and links, float adapters, pelet bands and otherr odds and sods. All fits into a cheep Aldi bag which has room for small flask, sandwiches and bait boxes etc. Bag, chair and quiver and set to go after putting bait, butties and flask into bag.

Bloody hell Wobbly

I'm talking about those - "right I've got 2 hours in an evenigng" session
I just grab my rod and reel set up landing net and handle and a small plastics box with a few hooks, floats and shot and a bag of bait. I sit on a unhooking mat

Often in summer I'm floater fishing for carp so the bait is just bread

I've got the rods bit sorted, Garbo pellet combo with 4lb line and dumpy waggler and a korum 1.75lb rod with 8lb ready for surface fishing, well will be in the near future. Currently in the process of sorting out a chair (any ideas on a light one ? Looking at korum, kenwick cheapo but light or a middy robo - any thoughts) small box of bits and bag of bait and I'm off and running.

Bit of a silly thread .
I often wander if anybody leaves there reels and rods not set up these days ?

Since 90% of my sessions are under 2 hours regardless of the type of fishing or species I have no less than 5 set up's ready to grab at any one time .

(thats nothing my brothers trips are lucky to be an hour he has small children)

My carp fly rod is the most likley to be grabbed for a quick session but I sometimes take a normal surface controller rod that is set up as well so I can go for the more wary fish out of casting range, though having really got into fly fishing for carp it is beond me why anybody ever bothers with normal surface bolt or controller setups it's far to chancy i catch at least 3 to 1 over everybody else at my local lake using traditional set ups or spooke wait and pray as I call it.

I did have two predator rods set up permanently though since the season has stopped one has reverted to a standard bolt rod .

Then there is my 8ft ledger rod set up with a korum quick change bead so i just clip on a hook length and feeder etc and its away, don't even have to break that rod down.

Spinning rod with trace on ready.

13ft float rod with centre pin ready .

I drive a toyota hi ace so don't have to plan to much just chuck loads of stuff in and get moving .

I have different bags packed for different species etc too.

Though trips to my local are done by bike.

I don't but I have cut my actual kit down considerably over the last few years so I only have to grab my quiver, rucksack and chair and I'm away. I always keep a few waggler rigs for specific swims set up, I have the depths written down for replacements so its just a matter of threading the rod, tying a loop and I'm away. I keep a small box containing three of each kind of float I'm likely to need and another one with leads and feeders so I am usually fishing within 3-5 mins of hitting the bankside.

I like tackling up as much as fishing though, if I have time I like to spend half an hour or more putting everything "just right".

As I'm away all week and only have the weekends to fish I don't have a ready set-up these days.

My river quiver is now dismantled for the Close Season but my Carp and Tench rods are still set-up in holdalls with their reels, but no terminal tackle.

Other rods, whips and poles are in the store cupboard all stripped down.

I tend to use the Close Season to re-make pole rigs so a lot of those get broken down as well.

Although I have lure setups at the ready and say a trouty based quick escape setup, I'm much the same as Robert.

I like the setting up too because I'm not much of a hit and run angler. It would be rare for me to go out less than 10 hours, unless it was for trout or lure fishing for pike on the quick.

Anything else is generally a session affair.

During the 'rivers season', there's always a rod set up in the hallway with the chair, net and unhooking mat next to it and a bag of tackle on the other side of a chest of drawers.

When my mate took up fishing, his wife insisted that he put everything back in the loft after use. I told him you have to put your hand down with a firm foot, you tell her it stays in the lobby like 'Jeff's' does and his wife doesn't mind. His decree nisi is due to go through next week and he'll be leaving his tackle in the hostel for now.

So you still have a chest of drawers - get to ikea and come into 2006:wh

My rods are always set up. Different gear for different Species. If i do have a quick get away for a few hours, then i take an old 13ft float rod if i am float fishing.

If i am going to a river for a few hours roving, then i take a 1 1/4 lb tc Super Specialist.

My current favourite super short session outfit now consists of a tiny spinning rod, a collapsable net and a little bag of lures and terminal tackle. As you dont need to sort any bait you can literally be away in 2mins. Its perfect for say an unplanned hour after work or whatever.

I also have a couple of telescopic rods which originally I purchased to carry round for impromtu plumbing but they can also be useful for a short session kit as you can leave it set up and collapsed.

Problem for me with short sessions is that as soon as I start thinking about the possibility of actually catching a decent fish I start adding a moutain of other stuff and suck the fun and spontaneity out of it...tripod, camera, matt, scales, sling...

All my tackle is set to grap quickly, I can decide to go an be out the door within a few minutes no matter what style of fishing I want to do.

All my rods live in sleeves ready to go, next to them are landing nets, bank sticks and a couple of buckets.

I like to travel light so all my tackle fits in coltswolds bag. The outside pockets contain the things that are always needed, scales, camera, bottle of water, etc. The main section is reserved for the actually tackle needed. All my terminal tackle lives on a bench in carp lead bags, a few lure boxes, unhooking tools, carp fox box, float tube etc. So it's just a case of grapping the bag adding the tackle needed from the bench, picking up some bait that lives in a box by the door and I'm ready to go.

My type of fishing, (lures), lends itself to mobility,(even if my old bones don't). As a result, everything has been pared down to the minimum over the years.
I have rods set up for pike, perch, even the occasional zander trip. And the fishing vest's hold all the lures I should need for any of the above species. Only the landing net to lug around. I could be on my way in three minutes. :)
