Doesn't it make you feel good to know that some people will take the time and trouble to take up an initiative like this? The pity is that it isn't far more widespread and then maybe, just maybe, not only will it help lots of youngsters on the road to a better life but at the same time help spread the word about the benefits that angling can have for our environment.

Fantastic initiative....but severly underfunded from central goverment.

They have targets of Banbury, high wycombe and Swindon!

Hardly dens of iniquity and youth crime...Why not start off with Leeds Bradford and Manchester?

The entire youth mentoring/coaching programme is to be applauded but it is hampered by legal issues at every turn.

Those that take the time and effort to become involved, I salute you.

Try living in

The Arborthourn
Burngreave
Pitsmoor
Hillsborough
Wybourn
The Manor
The Parsons Cross
Chapeltown
Shiregreen
Firthpark
The Flower estate

All areas in sheffield BIGGER than High Wycombe with far greater problems than they have, they are in no particular order.

but I wouldn't do Pitsmoor or the Manor or the Wyborn estates at night without a Police escort

People who live in cities like Reading and Swindon and villages like the Chalfonts who think they know desperation should come to a city with a bigger student population than they have occupants a bigger immigrant polulation than they have occupants and a higher violent crime rate than they would ever want.( Don't even think about stats as most crime is never reported)

And that isn't a knock at anyoe who lives in those places its simply that if they think that they have got it bad they should try living up here with the issues we "don't" have.

The issues we have problems with simply do not exist because they are too non-pc to deal with.

but consider the rise in HIV within the heterosexual community...it has nothing to do with the unchecked influx of cheap labour from countries where HIV runs at 30% and the rise in organised crime bears no relation to the fact that we in sheffield have a massive number of Eastern Europeans for whom organised crime is part of life and if you don't believe that speak to any good Lithuanian.

But saying all that anything that can improve the situation needs support...So come on Tony stick a couple of million quid from your bungs in the pot!

Lee, if you lived in the Chalfonts your idea of desperation would be if your nanny didn't turn up one day!

Anyway I didn't mean to set you off on one about High Wycombe and dont forget Woody lives there too!

Nice to see you back Lee and on form :0)
Don?t know owt about High Wycombe, but I do about M/c and your point is a valid one.

Good initiative just a shame they got the Labour Party Trojan Horse involved.

I fish, I?m your friend, my party has no plans to ban angling.

Gonads!!!

Speaking as someone who will be involved in this scheme at Reading in a coaching capacity I echo the sentiments that any funding for the introduction of angling to kids has got to be good. My only criticism is that schemes that involve offenders have money literally thrown at them while schemes like Angling Projects which Les Webber hs been running for 30 years for any type of kid attracts not one iota of funding from any source.
Not only has Les set-up angling projects [which schemes like Get Hooked have plagiarised] but he's also been instrumental in the formation of Junior Coarse Angling UK which encourages kids to set up and run their own junior clubs and, as some of you will have seen in the angling press, Les has also pioneered an innovative scheme that has seen angling introduced onto the school curriculum at several schools in the South.
Now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon and take Les's scheme on board without giving him any recognition for his efforts and that can't be right can it?
Instead of throwing these funds at kids who, if we're honest about it, don't really deserve it, why not put the money into a scheme that benefits every child ie getting it on the curriculum nationally?

I totally agree with you on that Steve, if ever a man was a Knight of angling then it would be Les Webber. Such selfless devotion to the youngsters and at great cost to himself as regards time and effort has screamed out for government funding for a long time but the fact that its his baby and not the result of some government/civil service minion means he won't be recognised. A totally disgraceful state of affairs obviously but we the anglers could do more to promote him to the media but apart from Keith Arthur, who sings his praises at every opportunity, he is very rarely mentioned.

Maybe Angling Times, Improve your coarse fishing and Anglers Mail could run regular features on him with regular reports on the activities and matches that he runs, make everyone aware of his good work, then he may start to get some recognition but more importantly some funding.

Graham, it's like banging your head against a brick wall! The Environment Agency can find 10's if not 100's of thousands of pounds to initiate schemes that involve juniors, offenders, disabled, ethnic minorities and females, why not just give the bloody money to Les to get it on the national curriculum and then all the groups the EA are aiming at get covered in one fell swoop and angling as a whole gets a massive boost in numbers even if only a percentage of the kids continue fishing! The follow on from that is more licence sales equals more funding and less shops and clubs shutting down as well!
