Pual, i was looking into buying one in the end i got a matt hayes specialist. im not sayin its a better rod, it doesnt do 11ft or 133ft just 12, but i wanted something a bit more beefed up so i got the MH 1.5lbs version but you can get in 1.25lbs. so far ive had carp to 10lbs on it and chub to 4lb and its a loverly rod. i would reccomend one!!
hope you find the rod your after!

If you still wanted the John Wilson set up, they do a Barbel model now that has a 1.75lb TC. Same as the Avon one, just a beefier rod.

I've got 3 JW Avons and think they are superb. Mine are the old ones, not the 11/13ft.

On the road to rack & ruin !!!
i have four of the original type john wilson avon quivers and a newer avon quiver system.....if i had one and only one gripe about the original type ones then its the horrid plastic things that hold your reel to the butt....other than that, they are the best rods i have ever owned by far!!!

I too have both old and new JW Avons, apart from reel fittings on older model ( which are crap ) absolutely superb rods. However I don't think I paid more than ?55 for either rod new.

I've just bought a Nash Avon off ebay, if you look at www.climaxtackle.com they're doing them for 30 odd quid, I've heard good reviews about this rod but will have to wait till the glorious 16th before I can try it, I'll let you know how I get on.
Also got the old JW 1.25 specialist rod, rubish reel seats as has been said but a lovely rod to use.

got to agree with nick on all points the original 11 foot wilson avon is probably the best all round rod there is,

the only problems with it are the single tip and the reel fittings, which they solved on the new one.

unfortunately they knackered the action of the new one .

I have a Fox Barbel Special with 2 tips.
The quiver is good but not for my local river The Trent. The Avon tip makes a
great Commercial rod not too beefy but more power than most stepped up match rods and you can use it for floater fishing too, all in all a useful allrounder

I've got a pair of the Shimano Beastmaster power 1.75lb, only had them for a few weeks but first impressions are good, Shimano also do a 1.5lb Barbel classic. Maybe a little heavy for what you want though? Paid ?75 for mine (each).
