Just got a email requesting i fill out a survey on the type of angler i am. Problem being i was stumped at the first question.

Please look at the descriptions below and then tell us which type of Angler is most like you:

GENERAL PLEASURE ANGLER:You fish using only/mostly a traditional running reel and line. Your equipment is likely to be: Floatfishing rod/Fixed spool reel/Either a plastic seatbox or a folding chair/Tube full of floats/6lb reel line/Maggots/bread/sweetcorn/luncheon meat/Size 18, 16 or 14 hooks/Umbrella/Rod rest

MODERN PLEASURE ANGLER:Whilst you still fish using a running reel and line you also now have 1 or 2 carp rods and probably have a bite alarm as well. You enjoy both types of fishing. Equipment you are likely to use: Floatfishing rod/Leger rod/Carp rod/Margin pole/two fixed spool reels/Seatbox with drawers, or plastic seatbox/Good collection of floats, feeders, leads, lines and hooks/4 and 6lb reel line/maggots/bread/sweetcorn/luncheon meat/pellets/paste/boilies/Chum Mixers/Polarised sunglasses /Homemade and self-tied rigs /Branded waterproofs /Catapult /Umbrella/Camera and scales /Matching luggage /Keepnet

CARP ANGLER:You only fish using carp rods and bite alarms. Equipment you are likely to use: Two matching 2.5/2.75lb test curve specimen rods/Matching free spool reels /10/12lb mono reel line /Two bite alarms (matching) Rod pod /Wide selection of leads, floats, Method feeders and terminal tackle/Multi-compartment tackle box/PVA bags/Chair of some description/Camera and scales /Polarised sunglasses /Boilies, pellets, Chum Mixers, Method groundbait/Catapult /Rucksack /Forceps /Folding landing net /Radio

MATCH ANGLER:Either a Clubman (fish with informal groups of friends) or Match angler (enters formal clubs competitions). Equipment you are likely to use: Two float rods /Two feeder rods /Three/four reels /Pole /Pole roller/Free spool reel/Wide selection of reel lines, hook patterns, floats, pole rigs etc /Seatbox with drawers /Trolley /Keepnets /Branded waterproofs /All baits/ Catapults /Umbrella
/Side tray and seatbox accessories

Which of the above descriptions is most like you?

GENERAL PLEASURE ANGLER

MODERN PLEASURE ANGLER

CARP ANGLER

MATCH ANGLER

I do not come into any of these brackets. Does that mean i am not a angler. I see this more and more no question for the specialist/specimen anglers in these polls.

Bryan, I thought that I just about fitted in to the "Modern Pleasure Angler" description but I would also for the "Carp Angler" description except that I rarely actually fish for carp.

If you make it to the end of the questionaire they ask you what you do with your mobile phone; amazingly making a phone call isn't on the list!

Nope me neither.

It seems that if you some times fish with a pole then you must be a match angler.

I don't fit into any; I don't have a running reel, unless you count my fly reel. I don't fish for carp but I have a carp rod and alarms. I don't fish in club matches.
I would have thought that 95% of anglers now fish with fixed spool reels. This almost seems like whoever has concocted the questions is not an angler. What about game or sea anglers?

I don't fit into any category either.

Thats the second survey this year that seems to have been designed by a muppet.

The EA one earlier this year was total and utter rubbish.

All these surveys have one aim - to capture data they can sell to advertisers in one guise or another.

Who cares what stereotype you fit into..?

Best avoided in my view.

Neither do I.

Again we have some idiot trying to pidgeon hole us. Maybe Richard Lee would like to comment.

In the course of a year's fishing I will fish for barbel, tench, bream, roach, pike, zander, perch, dace, chub, rainbow and brown trout in still waters and streams and even fish in the sea if I get the chance.

And I probably spend more time with a fly rod in my hand than with any other method.

Oh and this year I'm going to do a little carp fishing.....)

Like me, you're a tackle tart!

So long as I'm wetting a line I'm happy

The whole thing's a bit wierd, isn't it? Don't carp anglers get any 'pleasure' (when fishing, I mean)?

I like the way the tackle list kind of escalates - the poor old general angler with his 'tub' of floats, not being able to afford a float box. Only one rod rest.

Then there's the 'modern' pleasure angler (who thus defines the 'general' as an old fart, and as we all know, old farts don't do 'modern' things). 'You enjoy both types of fishing...' What? Are there only two types? Is that 'Carp' and being a 'general pleasure angler'? Can't I be modern AND like barbel fishing?

In some ways I'm glad I'm not in the 'carp angler' category because it suggests - presumably because I'm not in the 'modern' category - that I'm not a fan of braid line. (By the way, AT sub-editors, 'You only fish using carp rods and bite alarms' should read 'You fish using only carp rods and bite alarms')

I'm just joshin' but like all these 'surveys' they rather crudely try to pigeonhole people into what they see as 'target markets' in the belief that one category won't buy from an advert in another category. Actually, anglers' behaviour is a lot more complex than that.

An old Emap publisher once told me: "Surveys are useful. If the results that come back confirm your gut feeling, then great. If they're the opposite, then the survey's bo**ocks and you should go with your instincts."

In other words, whoever wants to know who reads AT would do better getting out more, talking to readers, and going with instinct.

Simple...WE`RE ALL fishermen and that should be the end of it.Fishing today is becoming more and more complicated.Certain anglers like to fish for certain species, fish at certain venues and many have their own personal goals.Splitting anglers into different categories in my view only causes bad feeling and bad arguements. We should respect each others style of fishing, and pull together as one. There is to much elitism and snobbery in angling nowadays so for the sake of the sport...KEEP ANGLING SIMPLE.

the problem is Bryan, you're buying At and you shouldn't.

AT's readership will fit into all those catergories.
Specimen anglers, barbel anglers, general river anglers etc etc are not target audience of the AT.
They cater for commercial pools and the type of anglers that fish them.

their catergories should read.....

GENERAL PLEASURE ANGLER (old gear handed down)

MODERN PLEASURE ANGLER (bought a float rod)

CARP ANGLER (solar powered, bought matching rods)

MATCH ANGLER (owns a pole)

You'll see them all on your local commercial, complete with copy of AT.

I don't buy AT that often anymore same old crap being published. Every week theres a new wonder bait/method/kit that it gets boring. No articles to get you thinking.
