Of Fred Carter's boathouse and the L shaped bay.

It's a pity the big bream and tench were not around, together with the shoals of 2lb plus rudd that were there in the 60s.

And who introduced thosed darned zebra mussels??

Someone did.

While I have no problem looking at Eddie's face, his feet - bruised or otherwise - are another matter. It's pornographic is what it is, Marsden....

I've always fancied a boating holiday in Ireland. Any idea what a week costs these days, Graham?

I have fished Ireland many times and fell in love with it the first time I went back in the 50's and I have always fancied having one of those cruisers for the week and never yet got round to it.

The big advantage is you havn't got any gear humping through bogs and the like, the disadvantage is you have to find a pub near your berth, most essential. Oh! and not a good idea for those that sleep walk but oh! so handy for fishing those places you can't get to from the bank. This has whetted my appetite all over again.

It used to cost ?20 for 7 nights at Fred Carter's place - Garnafailagh House in the 60s. And that included full board and use of a row boat.

What it didn't include was the 2 weekly "Shindig" that Fred used to organise. All of us chipped in a couple of quid and he laid on a big spread, as much local potcheen and stout as you could drink, plus about 10 young colleens from the nurses home at Athlone hospital.

Old Webby used to disappear upstairs sharpish!

The highlight of the Shindig was when Fred used to sing. Everybody, but everybody had to keep quiet.

He did the full lot from "Danny Boy" to "Rose of Tralee" and "Galway Bay".

What marvellous memories of the true Ireland.

It's all gone now.

The clarity of that water is an indication of what will happen to our rivers if those zebra mussels get into them, night fishing is the only way you can catch fish in normal depths. The Shannon, unlike our rivers, is much deeper and depths of 30 feet or more isn't uncommon in the middle and full of rocks too making it a bit expensive on feeders. What a terrible tragedy for the fishing in Ireland when the zebras appeared and it would be catastophic if they arrive here.

Correct Jason - Ship's ballast!

Great article Graham brought back memories of reading CF when I was a younger man.

Sorry to hear about Eric and his horrible illness, pass on my best wishes and hopes that its progression goes into remission for him, soon and for as long as possible.

I see you took JC with you, not seen him for over 2 years, so say hi for me when you next speak.

I thought it was Rooney's foot when I first saw it, no way is he playing in the world cup with a foot like that I thought.

Is it right that you did it trying to kick the hub caps off a set of Irish alloy wheels Ed?

I am going to miss the annual Ireland trip this year for the first time in 18 years, because of the latest family addition.

The fishing has changed but that's never put me off it and I'll miss the whole experince, big time.

It's a fabulous place and enjoyed the photos. Hope to get back in 2007.
